Quick Turbo Question and Stuck Wastegate?
Quick Turbo Question and Stuck Wastegate?
OK, I've read conflicting reports, but I'm pretty sure my '99 auto has an HY35 turbo, not an HX35? I had read that autos and manuals up to '00 or '01 had the HX, and that after that point the autos had the HY and manuals had the HX. From all the pictures I've seen, I'm pretty sure mine is an HY, is that likely stock, or did someone put this HY on in the 150k miles before I bought the truck?
Also I'm pretty much positive my wastegate is stuck shut, as I have seen pressures as high as 43 psi
WAY past efficiency and scary with the turbo bark I've heard at lower boost pressures...I don't want to bend the shaft in this thing! Are stuck wastegates pretty common on these? Is there anything I can do to free it up, or should I just keep my wits about me and not snap off the throttle at high boost pressures until I replace the turbo?
Assuming this is an HY 35 would it be worth my while to upgrade to an HX?
Thanks in advance for your input and advice!!

the hy, has a hard line(steel) from the wastegate actuator to the compressor housing.
the hx would have a rubber hose
I sure you can remove the turbo and free up the wastegate,
mine(hx) only makes 30psi with the gate wired shut and the juice on level 6

I've looked at even more photos and I'm positive it's an HY....mine spools up to 35 psi quite quickly, and 38-40 psi isn't too far behind....Don't know if that's good or bad, but it is what it is for now. Should I make it a point to free up the wastegate soon, or just be cautious when letting off the throttle?
Do you suppose someone did some other sort of modification to allow the boost pressure to climb as high as it does? Especially since you say your HX will only make 30 psi?

I had an hy on there and it would spool quick but the egts were thru the roof and the black smoke was embarrasing, it would pull around the same psi.
this hx on there now, will blow the wastegate open around 20psi or so, so I lockwired it shut, it could still be opening a bit and limiting me to 30 or so, I have not had time to mess with it, and 30psi is enough anyway.
is it possible your boost reading is off? I have 80hp injectors and J/A so likely I'm pushing more fuel than you are, so I should be making more boost.
maybe verify your boost with a mechanical gauge

Ironically enough, I was thinking the same thing after I posted last night. I'm just reading off the factory map sensor with my Pulse, so I will try to find time to get a mechanical gauge on there and verify it.
there's a tag on the body of the compressor (at least there was on my original stock unit) that says HX35. rubber line or hard metal line to the wastegate? is there any hardware on the linkage to the wastegate? using a turnbuckle or j-hook or spring is a common way to get more boost on the hy35

There doesn't appear to be a tag on my compressor body, and there's a metal hard line to the wastegate actuator (HY35, right?)
J-hook and spring are not present, although the rod from the WGA to the wastegate lever is threaded into the piece that hooks to the wastegate lever itself. Seems as though that would make the setup adjustable, but I don't know if that's factory or not...
