P1688
P1688
I rented a scanner from Auto Zone today and p1688 came up. After a little searching I know why my truck died yesterday. Died Pump.
My question is what causes the electronics to fail on the pump?
How could this have been prevented?

I lost a VP44 with that same code. The problem is well defined as an electrical failure caused by intermittent or a failed connection in the fuel pump control module on top of the pump. I did some research and found that temperature cycling and vibration may break connections to components on the circuit boards. If you are as neardy as I am, here is a link to the research:

I believe it is possible the Edge comp could have caused a burnout of the solenoid coil of the fueling valve, but only if the ground to the comp was bad. All wiretap-fueling boxes get extra fueling by holding the fuel solenoid closed longer, applying power to the tapped wire. Early on it was thought that this extra time the power was applied caused the solenoid to overheat and fail. Later it was found that the solenoid coil when measured outside the VP44 was OK.
If you lose the ground on your Edge comp, the tapped solenoid wire may hold the fueling valve closed longer and could overheat the coil. The engine will be stumbling and missing before this happens.
My VP44 failed with this code on a cool day with a fresh tank of cool fuel flowing through the VP.
