Overheating after 3 miles or so
Drives well for around 3 miles. Then immediately overheats. Blows lots of white smoke out of the engine bay and rolls a lot of coal. I was thinking water pump or head gasket definitely hoping water pump over head gasket. I'd like to be positive before I go buying parts and tearing things apart. Thanks

I also wonder about the "rolls a lot of coal statement"…
Out the tail pipe?
How does the anti freeze look?
How does the oil look?
I don't think it will be the water pump as this sounds more like a head gasket.

Oil looks dark but not out of the ordinary for a diesel. It does leak coolant but stays a good color. And yes when the truck overheats it blows extra ordinary amounts of black smoke out of the tailpipe. It often blows some bc I have 50 hp injectors
White smoke or steam?
Black smoke has me stumped, that should be unburned fuel. White smoke out tailpipe would be antifreeze burning or maybe a turbo boot off...
When my Pontiac had a cracked head it would surge antifreeze out the raditaor like old faithful...had exhaust gas in there too.....
