overheating

i read all of the post on cooling problems, and havent seen my problem.
so when i crank up and take off temp goes past 190 very fast and then comes down to 190 and stays in that area.
just dont understand y it gets hot so quick?never run at 190?
advice would be greatly welcomed.
will try the t-stat first i guess?

Howdy, welcome to DTR.

First, please fill in your signature so we'll know what kind of truck we're dealing with.

I don't now how long you've had your problem or what you call quick, but if you have a 190* thermostat, it will go to 190*, open and then cool back down.
Other then that....plenty of coolant?...is the radiator clear and clean?

Go to the top of the page and click on "user cp", then click "edit".

It's probably a sticky TS. If you do much driving off road or dusty road driving, you'll need to flush the radiator from the rear to the front. If you'll look in my photo gallery, you will see a copper tubing tool I rigged for flushing from the rear. Tubing, a couple of fittings and a garden hose cutoff. Pretty simple.

I'm sure you can, but I would buy the best one I could find. Also, I don't remember the details, but there have been some problems with thermostats or the way they were insalled. Do a search on thermostats and see what you can find.

Get the T-Stat from the dealer. Your going to pay a pretty penny for it but it works a lot better than one from a parts store. I ran one from o'reilly's and it was a 190* that opened at 200-210* and would fluctuate wildly. I put a dodge thermostat in from dodge and it opens at 190* and then never moves. Well worth the $40.

The overflow bottle may be causing the oil vapor to get into the radiator. Is the top/ drivers side of radiator plugged up? Search on the overflow bottle to find the cure!
I bet the thermostat is your problem here though.

Do Cummins dealers carry t-stats? I might be as good and a little cheaper.

There is a Cummins dealer in summerville right next to the 17A.
231 farmington ln (843) 851-9819
They are opened on Saturday but they are a little pricey.

If you got the stock crankcase breather on the front of the engine I would highly suggest you get rid of it. Click the Breather bottle MIA link below in my signature...

As for the cooling problem... Yes your T-stat is shot... I pickup one from NAPA and never had a problem. Sits right at 190-192*F even with a full load, hot summer day, with A/C running! While I was there I would flush and refill with coolant.

I would clean my radiator every time I wash the truck. Also pickup some hardware mesh (not window screen) and cover the front to keep the bugs out. This also protects my other coolers from getting hit by rocks in the winter time.
