Oil Sensor Problems ?
Oil Sensor Problems ?
I'm a retired newcomer and try to do things myself if possible, because of a "Fixed Income", so have mercy please. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 w/24v diesel 4x4. Yesterday morning the oil sensor gauge went to 0 and the check gauge light came on. After a short rest, the gauge went to about 80 then plunged to 0 again and the warning lite came back on in about 20 sec. Now it goes to 80 with just the key in the on position but not runnming. Every post I've read indicates the sensor is shot. Should I replace it myself? Also Dr.Evil's (2006) posted diagram on a 3500 Ram showed the sensor just under the fuel filter. Is it the same for a 2500 Ram? Supposed to be going to Cape Hatteras to fish next week and I'm a little worried. Any suggestions on the temporary gauge on top of the oil filter and do you see a problem driving during this issue? Oil level is FULL. Any help is appreciated cause I'd love to stay AWAY from the dealer!! Thanks in advance !!! Sorry forgot to add 134k miles

Yeah, welcome aboard.
All the oil senders on the 24 valve ISB's are in the same location, where you noted.
You will want to get a replacement sending unit from a Cummins parts house and will want to record the engine's CPL (Control Parts List) number. It is a 4 digit number on the id plate, front top drivers side of engine, kind of behind lift pump. It is in a box marked CPL so its pretty easy to find just small and hard to see! It will be probably be 2415,2906,2495 or 2907. This will make things a lot easier and get you the right part the first time.
Mine was around 60 bucks and was a different sized wrench than the original, however, it is more sensitive and shows a wider range of pressure on the factory gauge than the original.
They do go out, so I wouldn't worry that you do not have any oil pressure.
Also, the weight class doesn't really matter when ordering parts, unless for suspension stuff. 2500/3500 and a lot of 1500 body parts and trim are interchangeable.
