oil pressure sender

A few weeks ago my check gauge light came on I looked up and the oil pressure was headed down and then it came right back up the light went out. Well now this thing will have iol pressure when the key is on but the engine is not running. I think it is the sending unit not sure. I called to price it and got sticker shock it was like 200.00. So befoer I buy one I wondered if there is a way to test it or if there is a problem in the gauge or computer. any of you had a problem like this? this is a 01 2500

Yep it's the sender...mine is doing the exact same thing and has been for about 5 months. I don't drive mine enough right now to spend the retarded $200 bucks on the stupid sender.

Do not go through the dealer even if your engine is still under warranty. It is a non-covered item and you will have to fork the money out. My dealer didn't tell me until it was already on, so all I got out of the deal was a big bill and 3/4 of a tank of fuel for my inconvience.

All they do if I understand correctly is check pressure with a mechanical gauge and then replace the sending unit. I was wondering if one could use the spare hole in the top of the oil filter housing and run a mechanical gauge.

Wish I would have got mine done under warranty. They told me it was an "accessory" to the engine. I thought I got screwed and sounds like I was right.
