oil pressure gauge acting up

i have a 2000 dually with 46,000 miles and the check gauges light has started coming on,at this point the oil pressure gauge stops working, what when and where, i looked in the manual and couldnt find anything troubleshooting or even pics of were it is on the block, i saw one plug in the left side behind the fuel filter, just wondering if it has been a common problem,or just my truck, yesterday the warning light was coming on off and on numerous times before it quite for the day,any input to keep me from going to the dealer would help, thanks and hava a great one

Re:oil pressure gauge acting up

This probably isn't any help but, ever since I got my 2000 Ram 3500 the oil pressure gauge has acted oddly. As soon as I would turn the key but before starting the engine the pressure shown would jump to 45 lbs. Once started it would remain at that level without modulation at higher RPMs or lower at idle. Occassionaly on starting the gauge would show a lower reading on starting then jump to a higher reading. Naturally the day Joanne, took the truck to get some grain for our horses the gauge dropped to zero with all the bells and whistles. Engine was of course properly filled with proper grade of synthetic oil so I didn't really suspect spontaneous oil pump failure. I suspect that the oil pressure sensor, which I have yet to find is faulty or possibly poorly connected or has a bad ground. Another problem could be a wire passing over a sharp edge and having worn the insulation of the sensor wire. I'd be happy to know where the sensor is located if anyone knows. Thanks Pete

Someone else will prolly jump in with the info. I recall something about a reflash D/C was doing, that would basically trick your gauge into allways showing pressure. I will look for the tsb
wk

Re:oil pressure gauge acting up

Not sure if it applies to your truck...check out www.dodgeram.info , tsb 09-001-01. Sounds like a typical BS D/C fix. Make the gauge show pressure constantly
wk

A: make sure you're using an approved oil filter.

B: don't get the re-flash, it will render your O.P. guage useless
(kinda like your warranty) :

C: replace the O.P. sending unit if all wiring checks out.

Re:oil pressure gauge acting up

The sensor is located below and to the rear of the ECM. That is the area above the starter and under the lift pump area
