Check your rear end.

Just checked the rear end grease for the first time and it was a quart low, Hope i didn't do any damage as the truck has 60000 miles on it. I read several post on low gear oil and was gonna check it but it just got overlooked for a while. There is no signs of leakage so i figured they didn't put it in there new, mine is a 2000 model so a lot of them could be low. Just wanted to remind everyone if you have not checked the grease level it would be a good idea to do it, and don't put it off like me.

Re:Check your rear end.

I checked, and my rear end is fine. Oh, and my truck's differential is in good shape too ;D Seriously, I check my diff every second oil change. I'm one of those better safe than sorry kind of guys.

Re:Check your rear end.

My comment is that it should have been changed a couple of times before 60K. ???

Re:Check your rear end.

The axle seals are fine, i think they just didn't fill it up. I know it should be changed more often but it would depend on how much pulling you do with the truck. I may change it this weekend.

Re:Check your rear end.

Just FYI, DC states that on all Dana rear axles, they're full when the fluid level is 3/4" BELOW the fill plug. For the Dana 60F front axle it's 1/2" below the fill plug. So in other words, don't fill 'em up till they're running out. Just contrary to what I've always done in the past.

I found this out when refilling my Dana 80, as the 5.05 quarts didn't flow out of the filler. Did some checking and that's what I found in the owner's manual.

Red:

Bad news, if your truck came with the anti-slip rear, and you really haven't changed your diff fluid in 60,000 miles, you most likely now have an open differential. My money says your clutches are shot.

Hope I am wrong.

Changed mine at 61000. Royal Purple Max Gear 75w140.
3.55 Dana 80---- 3.75 quarts to the fill plug : there seems to be a lot of differences on how much fluid it takes to fill.
wk
