Oil In Intercooler Boot/Pipe

Since installing my Edge Comp, I occasionally blow the boot off, nearest turbo, while towing my 28' x 9' race trailer.(10,000 lbs.) Couple times I drove a mile or two to safe place to fix it, last time it happened, there was a bit of motor oil blown around engine compartment and I was concerned if I may have a problem with turbo now, never had oil the other times it blew off. Thanks for replies, Mike.

Yes, there was oil in the pipe, and I'd never had that happen before, could driving without any backpressure (boot blown off) cause the turbo any harm?

The boot blowing off causes a huge pressure differential that can take out the seal. Also, overspeeding the turbo becomes a major concern.

So, yes, you could have damaged your turbo.

I had oil in my pipe when I blew off the intercooler boot on my truck. I checked it several times over a couple of hundred miles and saw the oil lessen. It finally stopped and has not come again. This happened when I installed my twin turbos and they were almost brand new. So it may correct itself if you are lucky.

Oil in the tube is from the seal on the turbo leaking, Im sure its possible it could over speed and harm the seal but Ive never seen that happen, not to say it can't happen. What WFishin2Deep4U said makes sense about the pressures. I would pull the tube off the turbo to the cooler and clean it really good, drive it a few days and pull it off again and see if oil is in it again. Also take the intake off and see how much shaft play there is. That turbo shouldn't be hard to reseal.

shaft play

Is there a spec for the safe amount of shaft play?

Alot of turbo seals are "self healing".

Wipe off the oil and continue on. If you keep getting fresh oil over 1000 miles or so definetly look at replacing it.
