to o/d or not to o/d that is the question

Ok guys, I need some input. I just purchased a 01.5 CTD and I use it to flat tow my cj-7 with the intention of towing a tandem axle trailer, estimated weight of 6800lbs. Recently I have read conflicting information about towing with o/d on, o/d off and only when the tranny hunts. I need to know what the best way to tow is as to not wear out my tranny prematurely.

I do have a warrenty so I can not run a synthetic until it expires.

Thanks in advance for the info!

The 24V CTD shines between 1900 and 2400 RPM. I pulled a 12K wagon through the WV mountains at 80-95mph without issue from the stock transmission in OD. On the contrary I pulled a 10K mobile office from Albion, PA back into Ohio on flat ground and the transmission would have been hunting if I allowed it to go into OD. I kept it in 3rd at about 2300 RPM and again had no problems.

Simple answer to your question. If you can run the unit at 1900 RPM with your loaded wagon you can engage OD. Should put you around 67MPH. If you cannot achieve 1900 RPM then you must leave OD disengaged.

Now, when you have the extra coin upgrade your 47RE and you can run over anything you want in OD!
You'll need to experience it first hand. Try it both ways and you'll figure it out.

smokindogs got it just dont let it hunt in and out of lock up in OD. It wont hurt to rev higher(2200-2400) in drive if you need to. Main reason they say dont tow in OD is because many people dont realize they are damaging their tranny while its hunting lock up, so out comes the blanket policy " dont tow in OD"

A few bombs and you will tow in lock up in OD no problem at highway speeds......used to tow my CJ7 on tandem with my 94 and was grossing around 18,000 lbs fully loaded with the slide-in.....if you make the torque and have the tranny to get it to the ground, then you are set!......

You'll want a good aftermarket converter and valve body or valve body kit at the very least to realize the towing potential of even a stock CTD and when they are bombed it is mandatory!

When you tow with some more serious fueling mods, you will probably need a DTT or ATS custom tranny.....

Jeeptow,

Fill out you signature! We need to know the details of your rig to give you proper advise.

For instance, what is your rearend gear ratio? If you are running 4:10's it's almost manditory to tow in OD or else you will be screaming your motor just to mantain highway speeds.

If you have 3:54's, smokindog's advice would be valid.

Congrat's on your new truck purchase!!
