No question, just helpful comment

Just a little helpful comment to those who have noticed a drop in fuel mileage over time. My 02 has continually had a drop in fuel mileage the past year or so. Well I finally broke down and took it to a shop in Texas City to have the IAT sensor pulled and cleaned ( I could not figure out how to get wiring plug off of sensor + I did not have the correct size socket to remove sensor either).

All I can say is WOW!!!! Mileage on overhead went from 15.5-16 mpg to the old 19.5-20.4. My overhead indicator is pretty spot on based on past hand calcs so I have halfway decent faith in it.

Heck, for the 1st time in over a year and a half, my distance to empty on a fresh tank-ful of dino juice is back up to 640.....

CLEAN YOUR SENSORS!!!!

What is an IAT sensor? Does my 2004.5 have one?

Intake Air Tempareture sensor and yes, your 04.5 has one.....I'm not certain if it is in the same location as the 2nd gen 24v's....ours are on the drivers, on the side of the intake manifold at the very back.....it is directly behind the MAP sensor.

Because of the exhaust brake, I clean my IAT at every oil change (6000 miles) - it gets quite dirty.

I will have to do that, I've notice my MPG getting weak. I reset the TPS, now I'll get the IAT sensor. thanks will look into that.

I have an exhaust brake that tends to carbon up the IAT Sensor. I clean the sensor every 10,000 miles.

I'm not sure if it the 04.5's is in the same location as my 03, but mine is in the top of the intake manifold per the service manual...it's a combo MAP/IAT sensor.

Supposedly it takes a T15 torx to get it out of there. I hadn't read about cleaning it, but I figure I'll take a look at it this weekend, assuming I don't get suckered into something for my wife.

13/16's Socket and 3/8" drive with short extension.

See http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/sensors/IAT/clean.htm

I used Starting Fluid to clean mine. Looks like new when complete. Keep can about 6-8" away so the stuff can warm up a little.

Best I can recollect it was a 27mm deep socket which the guy used to pull the sensor. The hardest part was getting the Clip which holds the wire on the sensor off. It was one of those push the tabs in and pull off it off the sensor jobs. Tought to do with the limited space and the large hands I have been blessed with.

I am still loving the 19-20 mpg feeling again though.....
