Next Oil Change
Next Oil Change
Next one's coming up (Delo/Mopar), and I have a question. After a change and 11 qts w/filter, my engine drips oil from the breather hose onto the ground until the stick shows a quart low. After that, the level is stable and no longer pukes.
Would I be just as well off by putting in only ten quarts w/filter since the 11th is coming out for sure anyway? It takes about a month before the level is stable.

Re:Next Oil Change
The biggest problem that these engines have as compared to the mid sized trucks is a smaller pan to allow the smaller truck. I would not make it a bigger problems but short filling it. I put three gallons in the truck at every oil change. It will drop a half a quart no matter how much you put in it. It started that when Cummins over filled it the same.
Re:Next Oil Change
The owners manual says "Engine Fill" 8-10 quarts and the oil filter takes one. I just changed mine last night: filled the oil filter prior to installation, Added 9 quarts, for a total of 10 quarts and it's almost on full. I think the manual also states between "add" and "full" there is room for 2 quarts. There should be some room there for expansion.
Re:Next Oil Change
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the pan holds 10 quarts and the filter one which adds to 11 quarts and I overfill one quart which is three gallons. The dipsticks are known to be inaccurate.

If you're puking oil after putting in 11 qts, I'd go visit the dealer. Regardless of the dipstick calibration, the system capacity is 11 qts. You're dipstick may be incorrect, but I'd first want to understand why the engine pukes out oil after you've put in the specified quantity of oil listed in the manual.
Re:Next Oil Change
Ok, thanks for all the replies. Going to the dealer for some box trim moldings tomorrow, so I'll ask the diesel guy what's up. It doesn't puke the oil, just slowly drips it out for about a month before it stops. Stick shows 1qt low, then doesn't drip or use any at all after that. Thinking more of my driveway and garage floor that anything else, not trying to save oil. :P
Re:Next Oil Change
Diesel guy at the dealer says it happens sometimes and is normal, don't worry about it. Said I should still put in 10 quarts + 1 in filter, and to watch how much comes out in the first week or so. If it belches, he said to bring it in, but if it just drips, then don't sweat it.
Re:Next Oil Change
For what it's worth sonny (I used to hate it when they called me that
) I have never seen a post on here describing that symptom, and I sure doesn't sound normal to me. The only time the breather will burp is if you point the nose down a steep grade and allow the oil the slosh forward. The repair manual refers to this condition and suggests the possible cause as "High blow-by forcing oil out the breather." The manual doesn't get into fixing the problem. I have only a most basic knowledge of diesel operation. Blow-by is caused by poor ring sealing during the compression stroke and can be a sign of excessive wear, or by the piston rocking at the top of the stroke. You may hear a ticking sound if this is occuring and is sometimes mistaken for a valve tap. Hope this helps you out a little. -Tom-
