New Truck, an unusual problem.
Mine gave me the "dead pedal" syndrome. Took to the dealer and told them my fuel pressure never dropped below 6 pounds since I owned it. They told me it was the lift pump, not VP. Picked the truck up, drove 50 miles. Left my truck in Nashville overnight, drove it back into town near home, 50 miles and going through town had dead pedal. Took it back to the dealer and they said, IP is bad and replaced. The diesel shop here in town can test the VP on a bench to see how it performs. Good luck with your truck, luckily mine was covered under warranty. You can do better online for a VP and not really that hard to do. It has a keyway so you cant get it out of time. Unbolt the old one, install new one.
My truck has 175,000 kms. on it (about 115,000 Miles). I am in Calgary Canada and it is pretty hot right now being summer. It seems to have the Dead Pedal in the morning but not always. Feels like the fuel is being reduced for about 2 minutes, then it goes fine. I'll check on the warrantee issue and maybe try to get Chrysler to pay for it. Where do I find out the warrantee description? Is it in the owners manual? Thanks. BTW: it does throw a 0216 code.
Update on Dead Pedal
I took it to a shop where they checked the fuel pressure and found a 3psi drop across the filter. Changed the filter and said "try that". Still has dead pedal after it sits for a long time and still only about half the time. It does'nt have the check engine light on but I can retrieve a 0216 and 1693 code. The Cummins dealer said it might be that it has good pressure but poor flow. I booked it in for testing in a week from now. It seems to have the original lift pump on the side of the engine, they said it's better to get the Carter pump and put it on the frame rail. If it is an "occasional" dead petal, will that show up in a flow check? What else should I check?
I guarantee you're going to end up having to get a VP44. I went through the same thing--drove it around with intermittent dead pedal and the 0216 code for probably about a year (fortunately it didn't quit altogether like some of them do) and finally ended up replacing it in February '07. The dealer will try everything they can to keep stalling on the VP44 replacement until it can no longer be covered under warranty; then they make a ton of money from you having to pay for it. If you end up pursuing the warranty coverage though Dodge they have an in-tank lift pump now to replace the engine mounted one--DO NOT let that happen. I've read over & over that those pumps are far worse than the one you had in the first place as far as delivering the volume & pressure needed, and you can no longer get the fuel sending unit without the pump to make it right again unless you get one out of a junkyard. IMHO you're better off getting a FASS system or similar, or the Carter pump mounted to the frame BY THE TANK, then get a VP44 online and install it yourself if you're mechanically inclined. I knew very little about diesel engines and was very intimidated by it at first but I did my own FASS/VP44 install. Cost me $2600 (VP was the Industrial Injection hotrodded version so I got it for $1800 vs. the $1000 or so you can probably get a standard VP for, and the $2600 total price also included the FASS and shipping). PM me if you're interested; I have a detailed procedure for the VP44 that includes a list of every single tool you'll need. Good luck...
truck problems
Get a fuel lift pump that is something that you can install. Get a gauge and sender at Geno's Garage I put two on top of the filter and wired it to the gauge in the cab. I got my VP44 from Blue Chip Diesel the Fedexed brained pump has been quite good with my (gutless wonder since new). I see what guys are talking about what these trucks can do if you get a good one! But I wasn't soooo lucky! Have them POP test the injectors at this time for you may find that they are low as well. For awhile the 300's were increasing my fuel consumption but they have gone down from that since the last year I have been getting 9.9 to 11.6 liters per 100 km's. The other week I almost got a 2500 GM up the one hill except I didn't want to pump allll my coolant onto the road so I backed off of it!
