new 24v questions
new 24v questions
I just bought a new to me 98.5 3500 5spd. I had a 24v a while ago, and then bought a 96 12v. This new truck runs good, the guy I bought it from knew nothing about the history of the truck. This thing rolls the smoke down low before the turbo lights. I got home and put my AFE stage 1 on and it helped a little. My question is will a timing box help to clear the smoke a little. I like some smoke, but I want it to come on when I decide for it to come on, not just every time I shift gears. I would bet it has some larger injectors in it, but I don't know for sure.
I don't know how much there is to change. It has no fueling boxes on it, no boost fooler, and the wastegate on the turbo is stock. Im at a loss as to what else it might be besides injectors.
Where do you live? Altitude will make a difference too. When I drive my truck to Colorado mine smokes like a beast. When I'm at home I Minnesota barely any smoke at all. Just a thought. My son has a friend here with a 3500 dually and 5 speed. His truck smokes a lot more than mine too, but it is a 12V.
I live in Arkansas, about 1400ft. Does anyone think a timing box would help, along with a new boost elbow? It will be ok around town, but when I put my trailer on it's going to get pretty black behind me. Happy with the way it runs, lots of power for an otherwise stock truck.

Could be a downloader, I hadn't thought of that. How would I be able to tell if it had a program on it? Do I need to buy a smarty and download my own program? How would I tell if the exhaust manifold has a crack?
The best way is with boost/EGT gauges but it's not the only way...use a mirror and look close all around and under your (stock manifold?) exhaust for soot...I found the crack on the bottom where I couldn't see it just looking and it didn't effect the boost or EGT's much...
thats a good question. i dont know how you could tellother than the performane of the truck..and that woud be iffy
I guess, to be on the safe side I should buy a smarty and that way I know what program is dowloaded on the truck. I haven't found any exhaust or boost leaks so far. I should be able to have my gauges in by next week, maybe that will tell me a little more about what I have. The OBD port in the cab is hanging down, like someone had been messing with it.
If you found a generous someone in your area that owns a Smarty, perhaps they could help you find out if you're running a stock program.
Definitely check your intercooler boots... mine when it was bone stock did nothing that would resemble rolling smoke... does now though.
