Need some adivice on Airtex pump starting issues

I'm a noob to all things diesel, and just got my truck a month ago. So of course after reading all the problems with the VP pump I immediatly wired up a fuel gauge after the fuel filter. I found out the previous owner had already replaced the VP pump and the LP about a year ago. So low and behold at idle the gauge read 7 psi and under light to moderate load about 4-5psi. From what I've read on here thats on the low side. So I immediatly ordered the airtex pump from Diesel Manor with the relocation kit. Got it all installed with a healthy 15 psi at idle and around 10psi under load. The first time I test drove the truck I had zero problems except for a very small and slow leak which I just fixed. The next day after driving it for about an hour, the truck took much much longer to fire off then normal. Before the Airtex it only took about one revolution of the motor (if that) for it to fire off. Now it vary's from about 2-6 before she starts. I thought this would go away after I fixed the leak but so far it hasn't affected the start time. Any ideas why the starting time has increased? Is this a sign that my VP pump is headed south? So far the truck seems to have plenty of power still.

Another item that wasn't clear on the install direction of the airtex is where the inline filter that came with the kit goes. I put it before the airtex pump, should this be after, or should I have junked it?

I had one other minor question, will the truck throw a code without having a check engine light? In other words can I do the on off on off, deally and get a code with no check engine light?

Thanks in advanced for your inputs!

Brad

There is probably still a small leak - enough to let air in when sitting overnight, but not enough to create a visible fuel leak.

The inline filter goes before the pump, to keep junk from getting sucked into it.

I've read that some pumps cause a hard HOT restart, mine included I have the airdog and mine too cranks a little longer than it used to, I think Ill do the power window mod to the fuel pump circuit so that the LP is not cycled during cranking. if you want to test yours try unplugging the LP to see if it fires on the first crank, then shut it off and re-connect the LP, If it fires instantly you would have too much fuel pressure on start up.

i installed the same pump on my 98.5 yesterday my pressure is 13 wot
idle 20 cool and rises to 25 at normal op temp. mine starts instantly when cool but hot restarts require 5 sec.+ cranking with one no start. let mine cool a while and i get instant starts.
ive heard too much pressure causes this but i dont know what too much is.

The airtex E-7183 is a 15-18 psi pump that will put out 70-80 gallons per hour.

Is your pump relocated or in the stock position? WHo sells a good relocate kit for these and is it even necessary to relocate?

It doesn't matter how long I leave the truck, it can be 5 minutes or 5 hours it still has a longer start time then with the LP that was on the truck. My original thought path was the same as yours but now that there is no obvious leak anywhere on the truck I'm not so sure thats what is causing it.

What you have described is exactly what I am experiencing. The strangest thing, the very first few times I started the truck with the Airtex it seemed to fire right off the same as with the old LP. It does tend to start better cold then hot, but now it never really seems to fire off as quick.

So the problem goes away if you don't cycle the pump? Strange I was trying to bump the ignition to get the pump to run longer before starting. I can't really say if it was having much effect. Would you mind sharing the details of the power window mod, or posting a link to the details of what needs to be done to make that happen?

So has anyone experienced any negative effects from the longer start time? Is this considered to be bad for the VP pump?

Thanks everyone for all of your responces!

also try this i installed my fuel relay normally closed and used starter circuit
to open. the relay is only fired when cranking. the power window way will also work but has the relay fired all the time key is on and not cranking .
i think normally closed will be more reliable.

thanks again for all the help
