Need help w/ Valve Adjustment

I have a 2000 Dodge & when I got it used it had 120k on it and now it has 130k on it. I'm not sure when the valves were adjusted last and would like to get them adjusted just for peace of mind as I think they are well overdue. I know there are tons of gudies out there but would like someone to help me accomplish this task. Then I will be good to go in the future... I live in Pottsville, PA <---Click for map and I am willing to drive somewhere for the help.. So just wondering if anyone can help me out to get those valves adjusted...

Valve adjustment is not required until 150K on a 24 valve. I looked into having the same done when I bought my truck, but found that those who had done it early found the valves within specs. I'm at 130K too, but I'm going to wait.

I just did my 2000 w/ 115k. They were 0.03" over. I set them at 0.08/ 0.18. made it quieter and it seems to have more pop.

These are some good instructions if you feel comfortable enough to do your own.

I have been considering having my valves adjusted. Reason is, when I floor it I hear a rattle like a gas engine when you use regular unleaded gas. I suspect the valves are at a point where they want to be adjusted. Looking at getting some injectors, and doing it all at the same time.

yeah mine is rattling more then others i've heard...

So just for the heck of it I called a local Cummins shop to see what it would cost.. They said like 3hrs labor & new gaskets less the 200.. I was like . Worst case I'll try it myself or find someone to give me a hand....

This came from DTR FAQ pages, dont know how to post the link so I copied it.

NOTE: Engine coolant temperature should be less than 60°C [140°F] for adjustment.

1.Remove the plastic fuel pump drive cover located on the front of the engine.

2. Using the barring tool, Cummins Part Number 3824591, rotate the crankshaft to align the top dead center marks on the gear cover and fuel pump gear. (You can also rotate the engine by using the alternator nut)

3.Remove the rocker lever cover and gasket.

4. With the engine in this position, lash can be checked on the following rocker arms: 1l, 1E, 2l, 3E, 4l, and 5E.

5. Adjust the lash to nominal specifications.

Lash Specifications
mm in
Intake 0.254 0.010
Exhaust 0.508 0.020

Tighten the locknut and remeasure.

Torque Value: 24 n.m [212 in-lb ]

6. Using the barring tool, Cummins Part Number 3824591, rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees, or until the timing mark on the fuel pump gear is pointing down 180 degrees from top dead center. Reset lash for rocker arms 2E, 3l, 4E, 5l, 6l, and 6E.

7. Check the gasket for cracks in the silicone covering.

Replace the gasket if cracks are present.

8. Inspect the rocker lever cover for cracks or other damage.

9. Place the rocker lever gasket on the cylinder head.

NOTE: Make sure the gasket is properly aligned around the cylinder head capscrews.

10. Install the rocker lever cover and capscrews.
