My Dead Pedal Experience
My Dead Pedal Experience
Following is the history I gave to my dealership this week. The injection pump was replaced. It is a little long but I thought others might find it useful.
=================
05/03/05
Computer codes:
P0122 APS low voltage
P0216 Fuel injection pump
In addition to the codes which turned on the "check engine light", I had noticed a slight variation in engine sound for about 1 second at intervals of 2-3 seconds at light engine loads. The RPMs did not change. A very slight fuel increase would probably caused the sounds I was hearing. My 11 year old son noticed the same sound.
Dealership replaced the APS and cleared the codes under warranty.
05/08/05
After driving about 1 hour on the freeway, sitting about 20 minutes parked idling talking on a cell phone, then getting on the freeway again, I experienced a dead accelerator pedal. Traveling at about 45mph at light engine load, pressing the pedal did not increase fuel. I experimented during the 1 hour trip home. Sometimes holding the pedal to the floor would cause normal operation after several seconds, sometimes I had to release the pedal and then press again.
I set the cruise control speed at a much higher speed than I was normally traveling and pressed CANCEL. Several times when the problem appeared again I RESUMED the cruise control. The behaviour was the same as pressing the accelerator pedal. Sometimes the fuel kicked in after several seconds, sometimes not at all. This seemed to rule out another APS problem in my mind. On this model, the cruise control is entirely electronic. There is no vacuum servo to control the pedal.
I checked the computer codes and the P0216 code had reappeared.
05/13/05
I returned the truck to the dealership. The technician recommended replacement of the MAP sensor which is not covered under the engine warranty.
I replaced the sensor but still have the same problems. The most recent occurance was 06/06/05. I drove about 1/2 hour at freeway speeds, stopped at a fast food place and ate my food in the parking lot with the engine idling. I had the problem immediately when leaving the parking lot. I could press the pedal to the floor or return to idle position and the problem remained.
The symptoms seem to appear after the engine is at operating temperature and then allowed to sit idle for 10-20 minutes or even turned off for the same period of time. It seems that heat soak has something to do with the problem.
It seems that the problem is getting worse (releasing the pedal does not always clear the problem like it did initially). The warmer weather may be having an impact since the problem seems to be heat sensitive.
The problem seems to occur at light engine loads with minimal turbo boost. The engine seems to receive a little fuel but not enough to impact turbo boost pressure. The problem has occurred in 4th, 5th and 6th gears. Changing gears seems to clear the problem for a few seconds. There is no black or white smoke when the problem happens. I am also hearing a slight noise from the engine area at times. I can't really describe it yet but it is related to accelerator position. I hear it at times during light acceleration.
06/03/05
Discussed with technician and who scheduled an appointment on 06/08/05 for injection pump diagnosis and possible replacement.
The lift pump has been replaced twice under warranty. The last time, the truck quit and had to be towed 50 miles. The injector pump was not able to suck fuel to itself. There have been no performance modifications made to the engine. All void stickers and wires are intact.

I just went through the same experiance, but didn't go with the dealer. I'm out of warrenty anyways.
My cousin works for a Dodge dealer and told me that even if the tech knows it's the injector pump, he isn't supposed to change it until all the other "little" things have been changed first.
