Question Maybe bad alternator?

Ok I need some help. For the past few months, maybe since I have owned my truck it seems to have wierd voltages. What I mean is like when I first start my truck and let it idle the light will dim and then brighten on and off. And then when I start driving they like kick on high and stay on but then if I go back to an idle they keep kicking on and off high or whatever. Usually within a few seconds of driving it kicks on to high. Well tonight I noticed I drove probably a good mile or more and noticed my lights kick on high and I looked down at the volt meter and it went from like 12 volts to 15 volts. Usually when I'm driving it reads about 15 or 14 volts. Is this normal or whats my problem? Thanks

This is normal...your grid heaters are cycling on and off....they turn off when up to temp or 18 mph (I think). They dim the lights because they use a lot of current (close to 90 amps if I remember right).....

Ah relief! My truck does the same thing and I was worrying about having to spend money fixing it.

Sometimes if one of the batteries is going bad you will see alot more gauge movement when the heater grid cycles too. Make sure your batteries are good.

Since this wasn't a "life or death" situation anymore, I moved it from the Help forum to here.
