the master cylinder maybe

on my 2000 model when i apply brake the brake pedal will almost go all the way down before they start working then it wont come back up on its own it just hangs out down there lol could it be the master cyl or am i looking in the wrong place thanks

There should be a pedal return spring to bring the pedal back regardless of what is going on with the brakes. Sounds like you may have two issues. Look under the truck for brake fluid from a rusted through line or leaking caliper. Is your master cylinder full? If it is then you have a bad master cylinder. If it is empty which end is empty? That will give you an idea where to look. The return spring may be on the pedal shaft, I do not remember on that year. A lot of the time when the brakes go out and the pedal goes to the floor the spring will break because it has taken a set at the higher height.
