LP to VP-44 a given???

Ran the truck till the fuel light came on on Christmas Day and moments later the engine started to miss. Limped it home...4 miles......added 8 gallons of fuel and a fuel filter. No prime...No buzz...No LP! $220 and 3 hours later from NAPA on monday and back to normal. Is a VP-44 in my crystal ball? What can I add to my stock truck to prevent all these shennanigans and where can I get them? Thanks in advance.

Weird! My truck would go at least 100 miles after the light came on. I once ran it 164 miles after the light came on and filled it up with 34.8 gallons! It kind of scared me, so I didn't do that anymore! I was only 1.2 gallons from walking!

There have been quite a few posts about the fuel gauge sender not working properly. The important thing is to watch how far you have driven on a tank and get a fuel pressure gauge as your 1st mod or you will need a vp-44 sooner than you would probably like.

A fuel pressure guage.

Never let your truck get lower than 1/2 tank in town in the winter.

My old Ford IDI with dual tanks had a bad sender in the rear tank. I used to run that tank dry first so I could finish with the other tank (good gauge). Probably not good for the truck, but never so much as hiccuped the 3 yrs I've driven it. This truck is pre-stroke and is cheap to work on.

I've only had the 01 CTD for about a month and have not let it go below an 1/8 th of a tank. Do I risk possible damage if I ever run it out of fuel? With the single tank, I would certainly never do it on purpose, but it's nice to know. ~G

I'm still running the original VP44 I have about 55000miles on it now.I've opened up the fuel line from the inside of the tank to theVP44 and I run a 2micron filter before the VP44 I also run additives and now run 50% home brewed biodiesel.I'm also running about 25psi of fuel pressure.

Re-asking the question...

My real concern here is, did I do permanent damage to the VP here since the LP went out and I kept driving it ? I am pretty sure that the fuel sender is fine and that I didnt really "run out" of fuel. I just surmised that running the fuel tank low wiped out the LP which in turn limited the life of the infamous VP. How true is it that a new VP isnt far behind an LP failure? Thanks again in advance for everyones input. I like the site alot.

There really is no way of telling for sure. It probably didn't do it any good but it could possibly run another 200,000 miles or go out tommarow. If it runs fine don't worry about it.
