Re:low fuel pressure??

Welcome ADGR71!
Your Cummins has a 100K warranty and a Cummins dealer or a Dodge dealer should fix it for FREE.
I'm not sure of the specs the pump has to get down to before they'll change it out though. If the pressure isn't low enough, according to their expectations, they won't change it under warranty.
Many would rather just eliminate the stock fuel pump for an aftermarket, which is usually more reliable. You can look through the Aftermarket forum and see discussions on those.

Chris

Re:low fuel pressure??

Oh, I'm sure of it. I have a 99 that had the lift pum p go out, at about 55K. The Dodge ******* replaced it for free, and even bought the tow to their facility.
Mine was absolutely dead. As I said, yours might be on the line where they won't replace it until it gets worse.
Before you take it in you might want to try another gauge on it to make sure you are getting accurate readings. This will put you on better ground when you go in there and tell them what's happening and then they tell you you're wrong. See the other thread, Lift Pump vs the *******.

Chris

Re:low fuel pressure??

as of now there are no reliable lift pump replacements the holley blacks are not holding up to the job.Dont think cummins will warranty the pump unless you buy it from them but dodge should.

Re:low fuel pressure??

Advanced Diesel has one that they say is really good. If my Holley Blue doesn't work out I will get one of these:
http://www.smokindiesel.com/Dodge/24...ngineering.htm

When I was at the Cummins dealer the other day he said he'd put one on my truck if I could leave it, but I didn't have time. This is not to say that he wouldn't have gotten it on then said, "Oh no, we can't do that warranty." Buyer beware.

Chris

Re:low fuel pressure??

Yes, it is weak, but not DOA. Mine has 14.5-15 at idle and 11 at WOT.

Chris

Re:low fuel pressure??

I just got my Briar Hopper FP gauge today (thanks to the guys at BMD ;D ) and my readings are just about the same as that. I'm not worried at the moment but any lower and I think i'll be going for a new pump. I'm also gonna try some new banjo's from Wildcat Diesel to see if it will help a little with the pressure. FWIW the pump on my truck was replaced about 2 years ago...after the old one murdered the injector pump :'(

Re:low fuel pressure??

adgr71
Are you sure on your psi numbers? I would think that 10 at idle would drop a lot lower than 8 at wot.I had pumps replaced in both trucks recently and at 8psi idle, I could pull them to 0psi at wot.
The latest # from Cummins is 3990105, not sure if you will need the pigtail #4025182.
If you take it to the dealer tell them it is stumbling, hard starting and no power under load. Some dealers don't seem to care how low the psi is as long as it is still running. If you run with low psi you will be giving your vp44 a slow and painful death. just my .02
wk

Re:low fuel pressure??

Be sure to take off your FP gauge before you go in. My dealer tried to void my warranty cause I had it on there. Only had 8 psi at idle. My thread is somewhere in the archives.

Re:low fuel pressure??

If I'm correct, they take it from the port right by the VP44. If your looking at the fuel canister, the port farthest to the left is the one they take it from. At least they did on mine. But like I said, remove your FP gauge before you go.
