Lift pump question

I removed my liftpump yesterday because after changing the fuel filter it went out. I made some pics of the pump and stuff.
Lift pump pics
Now I do have a question: I noted that there is a checkball on the inlet side of the pump. In my opinion this checkball would bleed off pressure through the pump motor to the inlet.( therefore bypassing the pump ) Either my pump is somehow different, or I do have a brain fart ....
I thought about drilling a hole into the pump inlet and inserting a screw to hold the checkball down.
Any thoughts about it ???

AlpineRAM

Re:Lift pump question

Alpine,

This is indeed your lift pumps internal bypass. This checkball will allow bypass when outlet pressure exceeds 15 PSI, and has in about 75% of all cases, been the failure point on the factory lift pumps.

If you were to seal the checkball shut to prevent bypass, you'd need a regulator downstream of the pump to prevent an overpressure situation from occuring in the system. The overpressure may burn the lift pump out, pop a line, cause a banjo gasket to leak, etc etc etc. The VP44 can't bypass enough fuel to properly regulate the system.

Rod

Re:Lift pump question

I see that this should be a pressure relief valve in some way. on mine it is just the ball. No spring to press the ball down. This made me wonder.
How is this system supposed to look and how does it fail ?

I see that the VP44 is not intended to be bypassing this amount of fuel a pump with a blocked bypass would give.

Thanks for the info

AlpineRAM
