Lift pump question

Sorry for the nooby question here, I hear alot of talk about lift pumps and such, but how do you tell if your lift pump is starting to go south, what are the symptoms? When you are adding all these mods to your truck should an aftermarket lift pump be added to the list? if so what kind, or do you just change the vp44 out with something else. And last question, are there any performance gains? Thanks for any input

Re:Lift pump question

The VP44 is the injection pump. The lift pump is just that, a pump to lift the fuel from the tank to the injection pump. They are nutorious for failing and the only way to really tell when they are going is to get a fuel pressure gauge. I run just a test gauge that I use at every oil change to check the fuel pressure of the lift pump. The fuel pressure should be about 12 to 15psi at idle and no lower than 7 to 8psi at Wide Open Throttle.

As far as something better to use as a replacement I don't know. [undecided] There are lots of guys doing different things but I myself still run a stock lift pump. Which is the stocker that came on the truck in 99. I'm one of the few lucky ones that hasn't had a failure yet. 8)

Here is where I got my test gauge Black Mountain DieselThe website is under construction right now but their phone # is there. The owner made up the gauge him self and it works great to test with. I just tape mine to the windsheild and go for a quick drive.

By the way, don't worry about the nooby questions, we'll all be happy to answer them. You might want to check out the Tech Facts at the top the the page to, lots of good info in there.

Re:Lift pump question

I used a digital gauge and put it in the ash tray. I see you have Dipricol gauges. I think they just came out with a fuel pressure gauge.
