Lift Pump Advice

I'm still holding on to the factory lift pump but I'm starting to be concearned about it. I've had a fp gauge and it's been a good 12 psi and 10 with average driving, not pushing anything. When it would start to fall off a little, I'd repace the filter and it would be back.

I've noticed lately that it won't go over 10 anymore, so I replaced the filter. Didn't really look bad. I'm concearned now because that didn't bring it back up to 12. Now with average driving, it's down to about 7 and 5 if you push it.

Does this seem like it may be weakening? I've been trying to drive a bit frugal so I haven't floored it to see if it would drop to nill, plus I really don't want to see a nill reading ever to the vp. I might have to pinch a hunk of seat cover off if I see that.

I think it's time to replace it just to be on the safe side. I've heard a FASS system on a truck parked beside me and it sure seemed loud. I like the idea of the spin on filter and the air seperator, but being stock and going to stay stock, it seems thats a bit much, especially at $600 or so.

Is there a good, resonably priced reliable alternative out there somewhere? I really like the idea of a pump and filter mounted somewhere more accesible.

Airdog 150 can be had for around $450. They are quiet & reliable.

Wouldn't the FP100 be more suitable? I'm running all stock.

ALso, if one of these kinds of units get installed, does it feed thru the factory LP or does that get removed? I guess leaving a weal lp in place would be stupid. With the filters on this unit, would the factory filter be removed or bypassed?

I removed my filter, pump everything. The Airdog harness plugs into the factory harness for the LP. The 150 isn't too big, whatever fuel you don't use cycles back to the tank & it leaves you room to grow.

Mine has been doing the same for over a year. Just about at 4 psi at wot. It has been slowly dying. I verified my guage was correct. I am thinking of the airtex as its a bolt on direct replacement. I have just about 100,000 on the original carter lift pump and I cant see paying big bucks for all these over kill replacements.

Try the AE11203 pum from Aeromotive. I have one relocated at the frame rail with a Geno's relocation kit. Has appx 40K on it since last year and no problems at all. Very solid at 16psi and WOT no less than 10 psi. Good price on them as well for $175 at Summit.

I just replaced my LP with the economy kit from Diesel Distributors USA. Moves the LP off the motor and closer to the tank. Installed in about 4hrs, including a trip to the parts store. Comes with everything you need. My kit was short about a foot of fuel line though, hence the parts store trip. If you're stock I don't see a need for an AirDog or FASS. Give me a shout via PM if you need some help. I'm not far from you and I love tinkering on these things.

Had all the symptoms you have, Charliez, altho at the time I did not know what was going on (stayed away from the forum too long, I guess). By the time I got to the forum and diagnosed what was going on, and replaced the lift pump with a Glacier, it was too late; the VP44 went south shortly thereafter. Recommend you change your l/p now, before it's too late.

You too, Nitrousn.

10-95, sounds like a good option. Did you order yours from this place? If so, how long did ut take to get it? I've got a trip this weekend and I'd really like to replace it before then.

Well, I juist ordered the Airtex. I got it on seedy delivery. I really don't want to pull an 8000# rv when I'm looking at a fp gauge that makes me nervous.

Got the Airtex put on yesterday evening. The instructions we're actually non existent. There was a brochure looking thing that goes with an in-tank pump, but since this is a remote mounted pump, I have no clue why they put that in the box. I did talk to the company. They said they used to put diagrams in there, but there's so many ways it can be mounted, people kept emailing them telling them thier way should be in the instructions.

It wasn't too bad of an install. Took 2 hours. Would have taken one but I sneezed the day before and I think I broke a rib. Man it hurts when you crawl under and out about 20 times.

The end result was letting it cycle once without starting and it seemed to prime itself. Then once cranked, it immeadiatley went to 17 psi. At 70 mph it's at a steady 15. At wot, it's about 14. That's just the numbers I've been wanting. I just hope it says that way from this day forth.

Now, time to load up this evening and head out first thing in the morning to the Guadalupe river. We'll be at Mountain Breeze. If anyone here is in that neck of the woods, stop by site 15, look for the Green Dodge with the FP Gauge standing at attention like it should be, and we'll have a cold one on me.

We're going to be there in 2 weeks. Let me know how the Airtex hold up. I thought they were a direct replacement for a stock pump. I was looking at one of those after I go thru my last Carter.

It is a direct replacement. however, you can also get it as a remote mount. It's just the pump with a big bag of fittings and fuel hose that you can arrange however you want to mount it in diffrent places and/or ways.

After looking at the pile of parts, I almost decided to use the factory mount location. To do so, you unscrew all of the fittings off of the dishcahrge end, and then it will accept the banjo type fitting. it doesn't use the banjo bolt, but a banjo cap. In other words, theres a stud sticking out of the discharge side of the pump like a banjo bolt, and you slip on a copper washer, the fuel line, then another washer and a cap to make up the fitting. Then you'd simply plug in the factory quick disconnect supply fitting and the power connector matches the stock harness.

The remote part also includes a bracket, a factory matching harness extension. The factory location is a bear to get to, so that's why I mounted mine remotely. Besides. With my luck, if it's hard to get to, I'll need to go back for some reason or another. When it's mounted in an easy to get to location, it seems like I never have issues with it anymore.
