Check its pressure. The pressure should be around 15 psi. The preesure should never fall below 10 psi. If it does, it shoul be changed. The lift pump is cheap (around 150 bucks) compared to the injection pump it feeds (around 1500-1600 bucks). Get a fuel pressure guage setup. I got mine from Wildcat Diesel. I got everything I needed there.

There are three pressure reading you need. One at idle, one at cruising speed, one at WOT. Pressure should never go below 10 psi. Good luck to you, hope your pump isn't going bad.

Thanks for the info, does it matter what sort of fuel pressure gauge is used or will any good quality one do??

Theres a saying here, you get what you pay for. There are two types of guages you can get. Electrical and mechanical. Electrical uses a pressure sensor to tell the guage where to move the needle. The mechanical seem to be the way to go. Only downside to them is you have to have a diesel fuel line run into the cab so you have the potential for leaks. There are many people here that have the mechanical set up and have no problems. I ordered a mech. setup for my truck. I ordered it from Wildcat Diesel. The guage is made by Isspro, looks really sharp.

There is a third type of guage and is better than nothing which is a test guage. You can only use it at idle though. The more important readings are at cruise and WOT though.

Click here . Click Dodge performance at the top the pick guages and mounts on the that screen. Althought the fuel pressure guage isn't pictured it is the same style.

Thanks for your help, out of the two types mech is the the one to use i've always prefered mechanical setups as the electronic ones are no better than than the OEMs, same goes for the oil press gauge.

I'll have a good look around a few outlets locally here in the UK, and if i have no luck they will have to come from across the pond.

Thanks again i know this question must have been asked a thousand times before, but one of the topics i read seems to struck a cord with my potentual problem, most people can not tell if the LP is working simply by driving it, I think the IP is noisier than it should be, perhaps it's doing to much work.

As you might know, there are no DODGE dealerships here in England so it's not simply a case of having them check it out, i have to do it my self

the truck has only done 51,000 miles and as i can't afford a new IP at the moment, a little preventive medicine is a good investment

Hi there, this is AlpineRAM from Austria!

If you are in need of some parts from Cummins you can't get through your UK dealerships I'd be glad to help.
For simply testing the lift pump you can use any knd of pressure gauge that will go up to at least 20 psi. Plug it into the post filter port on the filter housing and see what it reads. (First gauge I used was from an AC shop, tried to keep it dry by using a long hose)

thanks Alpine,

I might just take you up on the offer.

I'm just going to put one in line anyway. Next question is where abouts, is the low pressure line from the filter to the IP ok??
