I hadn't heard about this until just recently and it got me worrying. I have 148,000 miles on my truck and have never checked this. I did have a new head put on my engine about 20,000 miles ago after a turbo flew apart on me. Would the diesel shop have fixed this problem when they replaced the head?

My truck was made in July of '98 so I am guessing it is definitely an issue with mine?

 

Mine was too, and it had started to move, but who knows?? I since sold the 24 valve.

 

It depends on who you talk to. According to Cummins, the issue was resolved when the ISB's came out. I also haven't heard of anyone on here cracking a timing case on an ISB either. I'm not concerned about it on my truck. But I will be tearing the front of my engine apart sometime in late summer, so if has worked its way out/disappeared, I'll be sure to post about it.

My 98.5 did not have a stepped cover. I just tabbed it and forgot about it. Now the only thing I have to worry about is a 53 block, VP44, 5th gear falling off etc.

 

mine fell out and busted part of the timing case right under the fan bracket off...i never knew it happened but the fan was blowing oil everywhere. its amazing how well jb weld works on stuff right before you trade it in!

It happened to my 97 12 valve. very costly mistake wish i would of fixed it before i spent a grand

 

I did not think this was a problem with the 24v due to a timing cover change. The 12v cover is supposed to be different from the 24v cover so they could not be interchanged. The 24v cover blocks the dowel pin so it cannot fall out. Am I wrong here?

 

It was coming out when I pulled my 98.5 apart? Yup 24 valvews and all.

 

Well, crap! I have a 98.5, too. Guess I know what I will be doing soon.

 

A little update on this. I tore the front of the engine off (theres a couple pics on the Alberta Boys thread in the chapters forum), and the dowel is still deep in the block. I didn't even bother to see if it was loose or not. However, my timing case does not neck down like the new 12v case I have, so I do believe it could work its way out if the tolerances are a bit loose. I took the verniers to both the dowel and the hole, and the hole was a bit undersized, but its hard to get a good ID measure with verniers, some snap gauges would've been better.
