KDP

How can I find out if my 99 has a KDP or not? My understanding is that it is up to a 99 model. My brother lost his this past week in his 95. Only cracked the housing, LUCKY!!!!

Re:KDP

Cummins says that in 98.5 they changed gear housings to the stepped hole design....but there have been reports of the KDP coming out in some of the 24V motors.....check your engine build date if its early 99 I think I would fix the KDP just to be safe

Re:KDP

You can do it in about an hour with the jig. It's too easy to do, don't bother checking #'s just fix it. Cheap insurance.

Glenn

Re:KDP

Cummins stated to me in a personal phone call some time ago that they used both the un-improved and the improved case in the early 24V engine. "Sometime" in 99 was when they quit using the old design (or ran out). There is no way of telling unless you tear down and look. The stepped hole design is an improved boss pin hole design. The old cases came in two flavors...non-bossed and bossed. The bossed housings basically have a "deeper" hole in the aluminum gear case. The stepped case places a slight ridge at the end of the bossed hole to prevent the pin from falling out. It wont prevent it from actually moving however...it just wont fall out.

The step is a very slight one and you almost need to use a hook tool to feel it once you get to it. PS: A tab wont work on a bossed hole housing...only the housings where the tab can be a flat design. Cummins recommends tapping the pin back in, using wicking loc-tite and punching the hole bore with a punch to stake it. Otherwise its a jig fix. Taking the cover off and re-installing it along with a total clean up of all parts could take 3-4 hours...plus a new seal and gasket.

One could take the cover off, drill a hole in the front cover directly in line with the KDP and install a thru bolt of the exact right length with a nyloc nut on the back to keep it tight. When the cover is reinstalled, the bolt would act as a "retainer" to keep the pin in place. This bolt would be inline and end-to-end with the KDP. Any fix is a good one.

FWIW, my October 98 build 24V did have the improved case although some dont.

Re:KDP

As CDT2500 said early 99 models could have the old style gear housings or the new style and the only way to be sure is to remove the cover and look...my personal option would be to check the engine build date...if its an early 99 build date then I would either jig fix which takes about 1 hour the or tab fix it which can take 3-4 hours plus a seal and gasket ($50.00)

Or ignore it and live with the fear that it could be the old style and mite cause $3000-4000 damage to the engine next time you start your engine

Cummins was not aware of this problem in 99 when there was still a supply of old style housings...thats why they can't tell you if your engine has the old stlye or new style case and only recently admited this could be a problem as can be seen on this link

http://www.nwbombers.com/board/ikonb...=ST;f=3;t=2507

Re:KDP

I fixed my 99, now there is no worry. Easy to do and doesn't take long.
