Just had a CA smog check, what a joke!

Just had my first diesel smog check here in Cali, what a joke that was!!!

I think it was the first time that guy did a diesel one, because the only thing he did was hook up his computer to my OBDC port and look around the engine, and that was it. I though he was supposed to do a snap test, push down the accelerator really fast and watch for smoke, but he didn't even do that. He did notice my pyro probe, and he though it was an oxygen sensor!!!

Then he looked at his book, because he thought I needed to have cats, but the only emissions device my 01 needed was an AIH (Air Intake Heater).

What a joke that was, anyone else have a similar experience?

He got the money didn't he?

The state needs your money and thanks you for supporting more parasites.

Yeah he go my money, $50 for a 15-minute job!

The only thing he looked at in detail was my air box, but other than that I could of had any mods and it wouldn't have made any difference.

Be grateful. In two more years,I'll bet we'll be on the rollers and their software will be able to dig deep.

Yup, I'm sure you're right.

Since this is the first year for diesels, all of their sniffing equipment is calibrated for gassers so they can't do much with it. . . .

Worse yet, I heard a rumor that a new law is in the works to include model years older than 1998. That means even the good old 12-valvers are gonna be hit.

One of these days, it will be illegal to change your own oil!!!

I had mine done and he quickly took my $50 as well, but have friends that have mods that might cause problems. No snap test either and I hear they will be doing the bigger diesels in the future 14000 gvw Ed

You're complaining? Should be doing the Snoopy dance. That sounds easy for one stuck in Kalifornia.

So are CA and Canada the only places they do diesel smog checks? What are the other states doing?

It would be nice if they only looked for black smoke. I'm pretty sure a fuel box or a programmer would be detected when they plug their computer into the OBDC port. I know fur sure if you have an aftermarket air box, you will fail the visual inspection.

Anyway, the whole thing is just ridiculous. . .

Took mine in today. 2 places wouldn't touch it because they thought that the regulations were vague enough that they could get caught by the smog-police for passing a truck that shouldn't.

I finally found a guy and just left it there for that afternoon. Ignorance is bliss. $50 for a pass is all I'm after.

Maricopa County, Phoenix. My '02. Visual inspection, floor it, hold it, let up - with one guy watching the tail pipe, then move inside, put the sensor up the tail pipe, snap it 3 times, pay the $$, get your paper and you're on your way.
