Jumping RPMs on 2000 Dodge

Trying to help out a elderly friend with his 00 Dodge 3500 4x4. He cruises at or around 40 mph and his RPMs will jump about 1500 give or take. He has a new trans with about 5000 miles on it and a Hypertech programmer. Also truck has 105,000 miles. Thanks guys. C

I own a 04 Dodge so I am ???? on these.

Does he hear the increase in RPM and know the motor is reving up, or is it an indication problem?

He said he can hear it. And the RPMs will jump up first, not like it is starving for anything. Thanks

Does it have a new higher performance torque converter?

If the enngine is running at steady state with a constant road load, the only thing that could slip and raise RPM like that is the viscous couple of the T/C, or a clutch in the A/T. 40 mph should be after the 2-3 shift point. One could confirm the 2-3 shift point (integrety of clutch) while driving. What it sounds like is the T/C lock up clutch which is nominally made around that speed, and it is slipping or not engaging correctly. If it was a stock replacement A/T, and one is running performance mods on the motor, it isn't uncommon to over-torque the friction of a clutch pack in a stock 47RE.

He'll have to use a code reader. I think Autozone or Advance Auto will pull the codes for free.

Sounds like he needs to clean the ground wire connections from the passenger battery to the fender, ECM ground connections, replace the gray connector from the alternator to the firewall.

You say the rpm's jump 1500 rpm????
That just doesn't sound right!

On a 2000, yes you can cycle the key thing to get codes flashing in the odometer window, but not all codes show up.

It sounds to me like the torque converter is going in and out of lockup while steady cruising.
Do a search for the 'filter capacitor' mod, it's seems to clear up alot of these hunting problems because of poor electric signals rom the APPS.

Do a search on converter locking and unlocking.
It's an electrical noise problem, clean battery terminals and grds - replace batteries.
