Intermittent power drop to idle
Yeah, Brad, it's as I suspected from the get go.
The P0216 will never get better or go away on it's own. The issue is more than likely caused by a failed(ing) lift pump which is mounted to a bracket up there on your block (the thing you hear buzzing when you first tun the key on).
You will need to replace BOTH pumps, one is about $110.00, the other one just over a Thousand. Add in about $14.00 for a new fuel filter and you'll be back running.
You might try Mikes Diesel up Elkton.

Or Delaware Diesel up on Delancy Road in Elkton. Or Sturgil Dodge in Conowingo (just for something to laugh at)
You can get the pump for right at $1,000 + a $400.00 refundable core. You can get a "Campaign 504" (stock/Carter brand) lift pump up at the International dealer on 40 in North East for about $64.00.
I'd be willing to give you a hand, I have a pretty decent tool collection and a good idea as to how they are replaced. From what I read, it takes about 4 hours start to finish.
The quotes from the places above should range from $1650 to over $2,000 at the dealer.
You must get yourself a fuel pressure gauge, this way at a glance you can check your pressure. Steady flow to the VP44 is a MUST.
Sorry about your luck. Once you get this buttoned up you'll be good to go.

OK, thanks for the info. I'm gonna try my warranty company, because I've had it in twice for this problem before the mileage ran out.
My brother-in-law is a pretty good heavy mechanic, and he's offered to help, also.
Are there instructions/hints here on the site? Search for what keywords?
Does the IP come from the dealer or aftermarket?
Fuel pressure gauge, ahead of the IP to monitor inlet/suction pressure?
I'm assuming the lift pump boosts pressure ahead of the injection pump?
I know that all sounds pretty helpless, It's been a long time since I did my own vehicles. Lawn tractors and golf carts are more my speed.
thanks ....brad

VP-44 Replacement: http://www.cumminsdatabase.com/read.php?id=130
They can be bought both at the dealer and aftermarket. They are all Bosh rebuilds. There is what they call a HRVP (hot rod) that is an upgraded version of the stock pump, usually costs about $600.00 or so more than the regular one.
The lift pump, get that up the road there at Cummins: Part# 4090046
Yes, "lift" pump does just that; a transfer type electric pump that sucks fuel from the tank, up to your engine compartment to feed the big Injection Pump.
You can search the entire internet for "VP-44 Failure" (or replacement) there is a vast pool of info out there.

Well, the best news so far, is that the fine print in my extended warranty is in my favor. I thought it expired at 60k miles, and upon a more attentive reading it gives me 60k more miles after I bought it used at 14k miles.
So, I'm covered. I bought it from the nearest CarMax (the used car superstore). They ship their diesel work out to a Mopar dealer in Baltimore, so I'll give them a shot.
I'm really glad to have found DTR , lotta' support here. I'll be recommending it to my CTD acquaintances.
again, thanks for the support ...brad

FZ-
I just went through this very sequence over the last couple weeks. I got the 0216 and the map sensor code.
I bought a VP44 from performance diesel warehouse (good folks and good service there) and had it installed in Prince George en-route to Alaska. I got the codes and dirvability issues again a day north of PG, so now I am looking at the APPS.
My symptoms come and go, and I cannot isolate them to temperature, throttle position or load. O/D selection does not seem to consistently fix it. My power will drop out suddenly and then come roaring back. Max RPM under load when faulted is 2k, boost 10. Sometimes it drops and stays out for a while, other times it drops in-and-out so quickly that it feels like it is "missing".
If it were gas, I would check for loose plug or coil wires.....but I bought a diesel for simplicity and reliability.....is there a smiley-face for irony? I can't have this crap happening 2k miles from a dealer at 20-below.
Have a reputable shop bench-test your pump before you drop a grand+. Troubleshooting by part replacement is the most expensive route. I have a good used VP 44 for sale now.

Fred, you do know you have a 5 yr. 100K mile Cummins warranty on the engine? Serviceable at any Dodge Dealer????
VP44 is the injection pump... If it fails it normally throws a P0216 error code... If so you looking down the barrel of at least $1,200.00 bill! Sorry to say...
Obviously you haven't a clue about how much an APPS costs for a 2nd gen VP equipped truck. $480 at the dealer and not much less elsewhere. Not a good piece for diagthrowsis.
