Is an inline fuel filter enough?

Hello, I recently bought an '01 cummins and come to find out the previous owner had recently taken off a FASS system and left the stock fuel filter out of the plumbing when he stuck a regular lift pump back on...so since the truck had no fuel filter the vp died and I ended up putting a new one on. I feel like an idiot but live and learn I guess

Anyway, I had a guy put on a brand new vp and he plumbed in an inline fuel filter right before the frame rail mounted holley blue thats on the truck now. Is this enough for this truck? I see those FASS systems with those giant filters and all I got is this little bitty one. How am I supposed to drain water out of the fuel like stock? I can't can I? Also, I have a vulcan mechanical fuel pressure gauge and my pressure has slowly gone down over the past month and a half that I've had the truck back w/ the new vp. It was about 14 idle 10 wot and now its about 11 or so idle and I can pull it down to about 7-8 wot. Is the little filter already clogged? Or is the holley dying? Forgive me if this is ignorant...I'm new to the diesel world! Haha. I'd buy the dang $664 full FASS system with filters and be done with it and not worry about the pressure anymore but I don't have that kind of money to spend right now. I just want my new vp to last as long as humanly (...electronically?) possible!

Do you know what micron the filter is filtering? Believe 10micron is stock. I have a permacool filter/water seperater that filters at 2 micron before the holley. Spin on filter.

I have the stock fuel filter/water separator in place, plus I added the GDP MK-2 (2 micron) filter kit, between the stock filter and the IP. I also added the GDP Fuel Boss fuel system. My psi run between 8 psi at idle, and hits 30 psi at 2,200 rpm. Unlike the electric pumps, the Fuel Boss is mechanical pump, psi goes up at a linear rate with increased throttle.
I would highly recommend a 2 filter system (7 micron + 2 micron) and a aftermarket fuel system. Nobody likes getting stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a bad LP, which ends up ruining your IP as well.

I'd bet the guy sold the truck because he knew the IP was dying.

I've got an airtex pump as a replacement from O'Rielly's moved it to the framerail with a big line/relocation kit from Vulcan and am very happy with the 17-18 psi at idle, 11-12 psi WOT, but I'm still really thinking about this setup. I really like that you would have your electric pump already installed as a backup, and for priming the system

Anybody got one of these on a second gen? What pressures are you seeing?

I don't honestly know. I had a very reputable diesel mechanic do the job so I'd like to think my simple setup is enough but I'm not sure. All I have is the little clear plastic jobby with a filter inside it thats plumbed in right before the lift pump. Where did you buy the permacool filter kit? I did a quick search and saw that they were something like $39.99? Thats not bad at all. Do you have the part # you used?

Hey I found these three perma cool items on summit. Which one would best fit my application? The first one looks like its for dual carbs. The other two the only thing I can see is the thread size is different but is that it? Why such a price difference? Thanks!
