Information please

Can you tell me what trans is in a 1998 24V 1 ton. Also what service interval i should keep. I'm going to haul travel trailers with her. She has a 5th wheel hitch but it's on top of the bed liner. Any ideas on what to do with that. Also the front end seems to wonder around a bit, what needs to be replace. I found her in Bakersfield California with 45000 miles on the clock, she's as clean as the day she drove off the lot.

Here it is.

Cruise around here for the rest of the drivetrain.

I would put a set of these on the PTO ports.

A transmission temperature gauge wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Your 5th gear retaining nut will probably fail, so you will need to know about this repair too.

Work your way down through the products menu to get to the Dodge/Cummins page.

Might as well throw a Mag Hy-Tech cover on the rear end too.

thanks for the info but

Hi Barney. Thanks for all the information, but it's my fault i didn't say my trans was an automatic. I learned a lot so far reading all the info, some good and some bad. Like the block#53. Yes i have that block in my truck.

If it is an automatic it is a 47RE. Probably the weakest link in the drivetrain. Get a tranny temp gauge, and if you are going to be doing some serious hauling get in touch with DTT, ATS, Goerend Bros, or Suncoast and see how they can help you get the power to the ground. Enjoy her, and she will take you for many miles of pure .

Bill, we need to know if its an auto or standard before any questions can be answered....

What type of bed liner do you have? If its a plastic liner, you can't have your fifth wheel hitch on top of it. Its an accident waiting to happen, as you will have your hitch moving around on you when your pulling. A spray in liner your ok. I just have my hitch rails under my bed liner and pull out the liner when I use my fifth wheel hitch. Its a pain but its safer.

Talking on top of liner

So I should pull the liner out. Do you have any info on why the front ends seems so loose.

Have you had your front end checked for wear/damage? The lower ball joints and/or lower tie rods are a problem in a dodge. If everything is ok, you might consider a steering brace and this should helps. My dad has a 01 3/4 dodge diesel, his drives like night and day different from mine, I own a 02 3/4. I think that the steering box is different than mine. Mine drives very nice and I don't have the issues that I have heard about. Its not a good as a car but darn close. Sorry I can't be more help in this area. So far I been lucky I guess. As for you liner next buy a spray in. The plastic liners are junk in my opinion. I have a dodge plastic liner and I hate it. I use a topper for the truck. When ever I take the top off, I have to pull the liner to get at the bolts. Same goes for the fifth wheel hitch. A pain in bottom end.

Look up the KDP (engine), DSS, Lukes link (front end). 47RE is the weak link for towing. Frequent fluid changes will extent life. ATS, DTT, SC, blaa, blaa, blaa will fix that. 53 blocks have ran for a long time. Do your homework.
Look at mounting brackets on the 5er mount. Do they frame rail mount and are they looped thru the liner? Have fun.........

I cut the bed liner out before i looked at the hole picture. Someone put rebar under the rails, great idea. There was no way the bed liner was factor. It didn't even come in to play. With the rebar under the rails all the force was on the rebar and none was on the bed liner. Oh well I didn't like that bed liner anyway, i'm going to get that spay in liner.
