How to Tell if Turbo Dieing?

ok... i been hunting to find the problem with the powerloss in my truck and i was curious how do you go about testing the turbo?.......what the PSI i should be seeing and such?.....im curious if my boost gauge is very accurate because when i first turn the truck on it reads zero for the first like 5-10 secs.......and the boost prreassure doesnt really move much while driving.....i got the idea of testing the turbo because when my wife droove my truck to the store the other day i really didnt hear the turbo spool up to much i heard more motor then anything.

You won't see any boost @ idle unless you powerbrake it. how much boost can you see @ WOT? 24v you should see 20 psi, more if bombed. make sure you don't have a leak somewhere. is the turbo making any unusual noises and is there any vibration while on boost? if it still has the comp, it should hit close to 40 psi

With my Comp I am seeing 36-37 lbs. boost. With straight pipes and silencer ring gone, the turbo should whistle like he!!. Hope you get it figured out.

If you want to check your turbo pull the intake off. Grab the shaft and see if you can get the wheel to rub the sides. If you can do that, replace your turbo. Some up and down movement is normal, but there should be almost no movement in and out. Also look for oil residue or anything else out of the ordinary.

My turbo is tight and the dried oil on mine is probably from the K&N that was on there at one time, and I'm pulling 20# stock. I probably over oiled it.

ok....im confused one peson tells me my turbo is fine and another says its bad....here the info as of now... i have the stock turbo unsure of the model because the little blue tab is unable to be read..........here how my boost goes......on idle i have 0PSI.......then as i take off ill hit maybe 2-3 PSI i dont build more then 10PSI unless i punch the engine over 2k in rpms........i checked the turbo it has a little play another guy checks it for me and tells me it fine for the amount of miles on it...........i have a f.a.s.s system that keeps myfuel preassure around 18-19 so im wandering if this is why i have high boost spikes..........ok... with the edge drag comp on at lvl 5 i feel like the truck is accelerating quicker.....but the boost dont build up tell i get to about 2k rpms and ive seen it go as high as 25psi and then it will drop down and lvl off at 10psi.......then when i have the drag comp off it will spike at 30-32PSI but wont stay they very long before dropping and lvling off at 10-12spi.........i want to figure out the real problem because it bothers me the truck never had a little smoke at idle before now it u can clearly smell the smoke at idle and i want to correct this.....

Storx it is bad!!!!!!! I had the same problem--power loss and engine oil in my turbo at 84,000 miles. I took it to the Dodge dealer and they said it was bad. They ordered a brand new complete turbo and put it on and it costed me $00.00.

The truck pulls a lot better!!!! It has plenty of power now.

If your truck has under 100,000 miles, it is covered under warranty.

I hope this helps, if it has engine oil in it----that's not normal!!!!

Your turbo may very well be bad. I went through this SAME problem myself and was about to drop the bucks for a new Turbo....Before I did it, I spent about 1/2 hour and checked all the boots (especially the lower ones), retightened everything...Took for a spin and problem 100% solved. Just make sure you do this b4 you drop the change on a Turbo, these Turbos are pretty good units and a failure at 80k miles, if truck is maintained well and truck is allowed a "cool-down" before shut-offs they should rarely fail at that mileage. Again, anythinbg is possible but I finally listened to the Forum members and checked my connections and saved myself alot of money and agg.
