How much Fluid's in an Auto Tranny Pan?

I'm changing my tranny filter soon. How much fluid can I expect to need if I only drop the pan and change the filter? I've seen 3 quarts in one place, 9 quarts in another... I don't want to spend the extra money on fluid if I don't have to!

12 total?? Ever time I rebuild and R&R a tranny I used 16 quarts with a stock pan, now throw in a "big" pan and we can be looking at 20.

To do the filter, you will be looking at 4-6.

On my 2002 it is 6 quarts with the stock pan with filter change when i installed my DPPI aluminum deep pan it now is exactly 8. I am sure if you let it sit overnight you will get converter drain but at routine filter and fluid change it is 6 and 8 respectively.
