holding temp

re did my head gasket awhile ago and seem to have problems with the engine temp just falling off and not holding operating temp. any ideas on what it could be? it has a new thermostat from when i did it its a 195 what comes stock in them.

You mean by falling off the guage says its running cooler. Mabey your t stat is stuck open and not working right. You can take it out and put it in water on the stove and see if it will open. Mabey your temp sending unit is not functioning right either.

The stock T-stat is a 190* with an extra baffle to help it warm up faster in cooler temps. It's possible that your new thermostat was bad out of the box. If you pull it out, you can test it in some hot water or just try depressing the plunger by hand. When it's cool, you should have a hard time getting it to open by hand.
