HO 6 speed bellhousing replacement

I have a 2001 Dodge Cummins dually with a 6 speed transmission and the bellhousing is cracked, I have the transmission out and have got the front bearing cover off and all the bolts out of the bellhousing but it only came off about a half an inch, is there something else I have to take loose? Do I have to take the transfer case off? Whats holding it? Thanks in advance for any info.

Wow, you have a tough one. I looked up the nv5600 in the 2000 factory manual and it shows a complete disasembly is required to get the gear train out of the clutch housing. Unless somebody alot smarter than I am chimes in I think you have a long day ahead of you.

If the crack is in a spot you can reach, you can Heli-Arc weld the crack, fairly easy to do.

Well, I got the bell housing off, was able to wiggle it out enough to get the bolts out of the inside that holds on the front crossover shifter, however that is not the way your supposed to do it, can't put it back together. After further investigation I believe the proper way to take the NV5600 apart is to take off the transfer case and the rear cover, stand it on the bellhousing and take of enough stuff off the rear, (which I believe to be the reverse gear) and then it looks like the whole transmission housing slips off and everything is setting there in the bell housing, If this is correct I'll take pics and post them so ya'll can see.

according to the 2000 manual you are correct. they stand the tranny on it's face and lift the rear housing off with a puller. then the lift the center housing and then the gear train. If you need more info I will try to help.

What manual are you looking at, does it cover the whole truck, and where could I get one, the only manuals I know of are Haynes and Chiltons and they're lousy, the only thing they show is how to get the transmission out of the truck. Duh.

The factory manuals. A lot to read in there.
(Like how to rebuild your engine including boring to oversize, transmission (auto and manual) all the cabling etc. Best 100 bucks I spent on my truck.

You can also order the factory books from dc. Look in the back of your owners manual and there is a phone number to call. There are actually 3 books for the 2000 but it covers everything.
