High EGT's?

Recently when pulling in second gear up long 8% grades I have had to back off because EGT was creeping over 1400. Ambient temperatures were in the high 70's to mid 80's. GCW was about 17,200 lbs. It's been a while since I've towed hills that big but I don't recall seeing over 1300 in the past. Truck is a stock 2001.5, 2wd, auto with 4:10 rear end. GCWR for this truck is 18,000 lbs.

I put the pyrometer probe in near boiling water and it read close to 200 so it seams OK. Running down the road empty at MPH EGT is around 600 which seems normal. Air filter is pretty clean. I took the inlet off the turbo and there is some play in the shaft and it looks like the rotor may have been rubbing a little on the case but you can't really feel any wear with your finger. The turbo doesn't look like it has over heated. There is heat discoloration where the compressor and turbine cases meet but the rest of the compressor case looks like new. Any comments?

I'm going to install a cold air intake. Thinking of a K&N system or Stage 1 Mega Cannon. Any opinions?

Do you have a boost gauge? You might have a slight boost leak, cuaseing the higher egts. Check your rubber boots on the cac pipes. The passenger bottome one tend to get a hole because it can rub your fender. As for air filter K&n arent good for our trucks. The holes are to big and our motors suck the oil right off them and then you get dirt and dust in. aem has a good set up Do a search on filters and intakes systems you find what you want.

What was boost pressure? Altitude?

Pyros are least accurate at lower temps-- your boiling test doesn't really prove anything- sorry. That said, probes don't fail that often, but they do fail.

Your EGT does seem high, given the 4.10 gearing and other circumstances. Are you sure there's no boost leaking?

Turbos usually either work or they don't. They don't gradually fail. If you are running 200° higher than normal, something else is more likely at fault.

Let us know, so we can help....

3rd or Overdrive?
How fast were you going.... what rpm?
Coolant getting hot?

Towing 17,000 lb up 8% grade... on a warm day... Anything is possible! I would trust my gauge.

No matter where you go, what you buy, there will always be one common denominator.

To flow more air, theres gonna hafta be more holes, or bigger holes.

Theres just no way around it.

Best thing is keep it enclosed like a scotty system so that dirt isnt constantly flying around it.

When the filter is completely open to the elements, well, its going to get dirty, then once is covered in dirt, the engine has no choice but to start suckin the dirt through the filter.

No smoke and mirrors here. If you see an honest, certifiable, 200 degree drop in egts from the addition of a cold air intake, you just won the lottery. Expect more like a 25 to 50 degree drop, if any.

Thanks for the comments. I was pulling in second gear selected manually. RPM's probably around 2500. I can get as much as 18 PSI boost which I am told is about as much as you can expect on a stock truck. Altitudes were in the 3000 to 5000 foot range. I checked all the boots and clamps between the turbo and the manifold. Everything seems OK.

As far as filters go I was thinking the conical or or tubular shaped filters would offer more surface area than a flat one and so could flow more air.
Also thinking of going to a 4" exhaust. Would like the advantages without a bunch more noise. Any suggestions.

A boost fooler helps tremendously. Could raise it 15-20 lbs. Cheap too. Can't remember where to get them. Anyone?
