All OBDII automotive computers have adaptive learning which means that after major work involving shutting down the ECM it will take a while to relearn the strategy and get used to your style of driving. This can take several days if you are only taking short trips. I always tell people to drive just as they normally do because if you are always changing , hammering it and then driving easy and then hammering etc. then it will never set the strategy. I think you need to drive it normally for a week to see if any new codes set or if it improves. If it sets new codes then you still have an issue. You have changed so much that you have to give it time to sort itself out.

it still was pegging that it was overheating though even though it was not mainly during driving. The odd thing when I was sitting idle it would for the most part be around 190* where it was supposed to be. I still think I have a short somewhere and my check engine light has yet to turn off. The shop I have it will hopefully find the short and problem solved for relatively low cost of $$$. I will see

Not sure what happened with the original guy but I had tge same issue. I had the alternator bench tested. Turned out the alternator had a bad diode and it allowed alternating current to flow through the entire electrical system. This fried one of my batteries the ECM and possably damaged the TPS and or vp44 . So I replaced the alternator and ECM now the truck is drive able but still has some surging under full power.

Hi Taken5875,
After a surge of AC, which is not only AC but can be up to 205 volts peak for short durations if the diodes fail, I would be most certain the built-in processor in the VP44 is toast.
You can easily reset the TPS now that you have a new ECM, and if the surging remains I would look to the injection pump as the problem. The TPS is nothing more than a variable resistor, so pretty simple and not prone to failure from surging voltage.
If it is the pump I would not waste any time replacing it with anything other than a Blue Chip Diesel rebuilt unit, they rebuild them correctly so there is no surprise bypass failures that will soon lead to premature failure of the pump.

The broken truck is my old 2500 work truck so I'm just glad she is up and running at all. I have a nice new to me 01 3500 with 60k miles on it strait from nice dry AZ. She will stay in the garage all winter unless the other truck dies again.
