Help needed, LP changed...
How do I get it to start now?
I changed the lift pump today, but truck still will not start. I'm worried!
The truck shut off while driving last week. Lift pump was not working, but before I figured that out I tried to start the engine for a while so I'm wondering if need to prime the LP, bleed air from the system or what???
If I do need to bleed it, could someone explain how to do it.
I'm sorry for asking for help in my very first post here but I really need help here so thanks to all that give me some.
I've owned the truck, a 1999 Quad Cab 2500 4X4, since it was new. It now has about 83,000 miles. It is stock under the hood except for a K&N cone filter, no bombing at all. I am ok with wrenching but this is the first time I have had any trouble under the hood and I am not a diesel mechanic...yet.

Welcome to the DTR. You can loosen the supply fuel line from the VP pump and bump the starter you should hear the lift pump run for about 30sec. You then should see fuel start running from this line. Tighten the line back then try to start the truck. You may have to bump the starter a few times and let the lift pump run before you get all the air out.
loosen the supply fuel line from the VP pump
I bumped the starter about 6-8 times, the lift pump ran for a while then shut off as it should. But didn't even try to start when I tried. Batteries are getting low now since I ran them down last week when it died along the road, charger is hooked up.
I don't need to prime the LP? Something I didn't think about until after I had it installed. I did manage to change the LP by just removing the lower part of the filter housing, didn't know my arm could bend like that!
I'm really hoping the Injection Pump didn't die along with the LP...it will be a sorry Christmas around here if it did.
Loosen one of the lines going to the injector and crank the engine to see if you have fuel going to the injectors from the injection pump (vp44).
When you bump the starter the lift pump should run for approx. 30 seconds, at that point you can crank the engine for around 10-15 seconds at a time, have someone watch to see if fuel is coming from the line you loosened.
You can also take one of the brass plug out from the top of the fuel filter cannister to see if there is fuel there, if you didn't fill the cannister prior to reinstalling.

My lift pump just went out on me too. Thought my VP might have gone with it, but got er started after about 10 attempts to bleed the injector lines. Had to crank for about 20 seconds each time also. Probably be looking for a new starter someday.

I'll get back to it this evening if it isn't still raining. I'll check to see if the LP is getting fuel to the filter housing. If it is I guess I'll have to bleed each injector???
I don't understand why the injectors need to be loosened for them to bleed out the air.

You won't have to bleed each injector. Just pick one line that is easy to reach, # 1 or 3. Crack the line loose where it goes into the head and try to to crank the truck to see if fuel is getting up to the injectors.
No luck.
I had fuel flow to the filter housing, so the new lift pump is working.
I loosened the line to the front injector and cranked it over three times for about 15-20 seconds. No fuel.
I sure hope tis doesn't mean what I think.
Is there anything else I can try? A fuse or relay?
How do I know for sure if it is the injection pump?
