2001 2500 5sp injection pump
Hey guys...had my injection pump go out last night. Dealer says $2600.00 to replace. This is my first diesel so I was curious as to what is involved with install of a new injection and lift pump. Should I let the dealer do it or can it be done by a somewhat savy shady tree wrench turner. Also where could I get the parts to do the job (injection pump and transfer pump)? Thanks for the advice!!

Removing and installing a VP44 can certainly be done by "a somewhat savy shady tree wrench turner".
Here are some excellent removal and install instructions here:

When I bought my Campaign pumps for my big line install, the pumps came with great instructions on how to R&R the injection pump.
Had it step by step and even had the size wrench needed for each step.

He is referring to a replacement LIFT pump, more than likely bought from a Cummins dealer (approx. $64.00).
There is a strong possibility, depending on how long you have been running with a bad lift pump (if indeed that is the issue) that just replacing it may do nothing at all.
They send a 5 or 6 page booklet with the "Campaign 504" lift pumps that detail replacing the Injection Pump. I assume this is because many times it has died as a result of the failed LP.
DON'T LET THE DEALER REPLACE YOUR PUMP(S). You can easily save around $750.00 by letting a Cummins dealer do it. Doing it yourself (or with a hand from someone) will be the cheapest way out. I would imagine if you did both pumps yourself you could get out for about $1,300 v.s almost $3,000 at a Dodge dealer.
Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me some reputable places to get an injection pump and transfer pump or does anyone know of a Cummins dealer around Charlotte, NC? Any suggestions of an internet source for these parts? Thanks
