more questions......

Just alot of ?'s, first time doing this.

1.After I pulled the head off there was fuel sitting in the top of the pistons, truck had been sitting for 2 days since last run. is this normal.
In this fuel were glitter sized shavings . I put a small magnet in the fuel and they stuck to it, so it's metal but where did it come from? I am thinking ip. Anybody got any ideas.

2.Some of the valves were wet on the cylinder side, maybe it's a good thing I did this, but I did roll the engine over to TDC before I started so maybe that's the cause.

3. In the water jackets on the drivers side I can see a yellowish/whiteish slime, it's not hard I can remove it with my finger, guess I need to do a superflush on the system, I did pull the radiator to get it cleaned while the truck is down, what should I use to clean the system after I get it back together.

I am sure I will have more.
thanks.

That is a nice one. The original old blue for me is my grandpa's 72 chevy 3/4 4x4. That 350 cid ran for upteen years on propane until he died and now my brother has the truck w/ a completely restored body and interior powered by a 454 that doesn't idle smooth and is painted intense blue, the best color ever by dodge.

i don't mean to hijack the thread , i too am having to replace head gasket along with studs. what symptoms were you showing from your leak? i have excessive crankcase pressure and wonder if it's from the head gasket or sleeves/rings are wore? these trucks do have sleeves don't they? i'm planning on someone else doing the work but not sure who? any suggestions in central texas?

thanks, kip

If you are talking about Leibee Machine in Rock Springs, he is a good guy and will do a good job for you. Tell him RTillery sent you. He knows what he is doing. Good luck.

The Cummins do not have sleeves, bore is part of the block just like a gasser. Some small amount of fuel is normal on top of piston, from when you remove fuel lines and injectors, and/or from rolling engine over.

Metal pieces on top of piston is not normal, but is probably from head gasket compression seal material. If it was from injection pump, it would have quit working long before that, and would already have been burnt, or circulated thru engine, clean everything off as good as possible. Check head and deck for straightness, check all bolts for stretching, and all related parts, get head rebuilt if lots of miles on it. Check bores for scratches, and for cross hatch pattern. Follow head gasket instructions with kit you have.

You can drain block and wipe off any slime you see, get rad flushed and externally cleaned if oil residue is on it, extend puke hose down to front end(toss the bottle), change oil. You can use any cooling system flush when it's all back together, but leave thermostat out when flushing, to completely flush block. That should keep you busy for awhile.

Just the typical head gasket problem for my year up in the left front corner. I haven't checked the studs yet.

Just got back from seeing 14 hairline cracks in the head . They go from the seat out into the head, 2 went out at least 1/4"-3/8". So it looks like I'm getting and new bare head and the machine shop will install my hardware. Valves all look good, still have to check the valve springs.
