Converter Lockup - When your Torque Converter (in auto tranny) stops slipping and "locks" into straight thru drive from Engine to Driveshaft (1:1). You'll feel it most often in 3rd gear...rpm drops about 3-400 rpm.

Spooling is your Turbo winding up to full speed from idle... well over 100,000 rpm at WOT.

Pretty sure the TC doesn't lock up in 3rd unless you turn the OD off. OD off button is on the end of the shift lever. I think the TC locks up only in 4th, or overdrive under normal conditions. You can tell when it locks up by pressing on go peddle and the tach rises with the engine instead of "slipping".

My DTT does.... and OD is fully locked up at all times!
Been a while and I don't remember how the stock tranny functioned. Drove a first Gen this weekend with a 47RH (Hydraulic) Goerand Tranny that locked/unlocked in OD. No apparent Lock up in third?? Pretty sure my 47RE was just like my DTT, I think?
But you may be right!

Normal stock auto tranny shifting is thus:

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd-locked, OD, OD-locked.

I think?

I think this depends on year and V/B. My friends 97 Lock up was last (even with BD V/B). On the 00 we had it was between 3rd and OD. I think it was aftermarket V/B too.

Mine'll lock up in 3rd with OD on or off. It usually happens around 40-45mph. You'll definately know when it's locked up. When you try to accelerate (especially at low speeds) it feels like the engine is bogging.

Lockup means tranny running COOL---this is a good thing---no slippage

Very unusual to have a high performance, after market TC alone... and not recommended by most shops. Difficult to tell about the valve body by appearance alone. Not sure about case markings?

well im not sure its a high-performance t/c. it is painted blue thats all im going by. i personally dont think its hi-po cuz, if i stand on it from a dead stop the rpms for the stall are near 2700. then when it shifts to 3rd the lock-up hits and the rpms drop alot and she really starts to accel then.

i have a feeling that i just have a reman, or factory type rebuild. the trans is painted gray in color. but it does appear to be fairly strong, shifts nice and firm. i havent towed any thing more than maybe 3-4000lbs with it yet but i beat the living s**t out of my truck, just cuz its awesome. hasnt slipped yet.
