Finished installing my gauges last night and test drove the truck. After the engine was warmed up I hit a nice straight stretch and dropped the hammer down. I went from 0-65 mph. My EGTs' got up to 1000°, boost went to 18 PSI max. Ambient air temp was ~78°.

Now here is my question. I blow a lot more smoke than usual at WOT than I did when I first got this truck 34,000 miles ago. It used to be a light haze of smoke behind my truck, now I leave behind clouds of smoke (not thick, but way more than before). What could be causing that, slight boost leak, wastegate opening a little early? There are no codes in the ECM at all.

 

What color is the smoke? White smoke can be coolent in the combustion chamber. Black smoke can be a high air to fuel ratio, over fueling.

 

Hey J.R. you might looking into checking the intercooler boots and clamps too see if you got a boost leak. then watch your egts and check your air filter? is the only other thing i can think of.

Last I checked the IC boots were fine. None had slipped, all were tight, and no signs of cracks or rubbing.

I am thinking along the lines of the wastegate weakening. I think it is opening early (ECM doesn't know that), and the ECM is injecting the appropriate amount of fuel for the power level demanded. However, there is no codes. I think the ECM is trying to make better power out however the engine can't due to lack of air for the fuel injected. The ECM knows the engine isn't overboosting, so it keeps the fuel going. Especially since the boost only goes to 18 psi. Should it be around 22 psi?

Anyway, is there a way to check the wastegate's operation? Is the linkage adjustable on a HY-35?

 

Anyone have any ideas?

 

Your ECM knows how much boost you are making via the MAP sensor... and will fuel accordingly. Your wastegate could be opening early I suppose though.

When was the last time your valve lash was set?

 

Less than 15,000 miles ago for the valve adjustment. You just brought up something else TOOL. I wonder is the MAP is due for cleaning or replacement?

 

not to hijack, but how do you clean the map sensor?

 

remove it and spray with carb cleaner. i think it is 1" and 1/4 deep socket.

sounds like a dirty map sensor(like said before) when mine was stock i was runnin 26 -27# boost, so 18 sounds a little low. and as a engine gets older it will smoke a little, partualy to do with the injectors being wore out.

 

well plus if you hadn't hammered the throttle in a little while, carbon can build up and then when you put the peddle to the metal all that carbon has to go somewhere!!

JRS Dodge Diesel, hwo often and far to you get to drive on a regular basis? You could have a bit of slobber building up on the inj tips from cold runs. When you rotating back to the states, and where? Be nice to have someone on base with a diesel...

 

The truck gets driven at least once a week, and very rarely does is not reach full operating temperature. I am going to clean the MAP sensor soon.

I transfer next summer, though I have no idea where I am going yet.
