full throttle, no rpms
full throttle, no rpms
friend of mine just picked up a 1999 24 valve automatic, 150,000 miles, well sometimes when he stands in it, it wont rev past 2000 rpm's, has to back out of it, let it coast some then get back into it and its fine, it does it on and off intermittenly, it is doing this alot at high speed/full throttle conditions. bad lift pump causing injection pump to run dry??? i am not the best with the VP44, he has a 70 horse EZ but it did this before he put it on it. what do you suggest for a lift pump, "stock" or aftermarket.
I get a fuel pressure gage on it. It's easy on the 99. There are 2 fittings onthe top of the fuel filter housing. Put the gage on the front one , this will give you pressure after the filter. Go after the easy stuff first. Fuel filter been changed?? possible bad fuel. How's the aircleaner?? Get the codes read for starters.
he isnt running an air filter, dont ask me why, ill have him change the fuel filter and other small stuff, the check engine light has been on cince he bought it, he has never owned or worked on a diesel.
The turbo isn't the only thing that won't like not having a filter. Piston rings, valve seats, engine oil, almost every moving part will be affected.
As far as the throttle problem, could be either bad throttle position sensor, or dead/dying VP44.

air filter? come on, either the turbo or the intercooler will keep most of the big stuff out of the engine (you know, like birds and neighboorhood cats, for instance) thats what they're there for, right?

i know, i cant wait, another question, there is no play in the turbo but it has a high pitched "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" to the truck when its at higher RPM's coming from the turbo, does it with or without a filter.
ok got it figured out, took the truck over too Woodruff's, Dan was polite enough to scan the truck for free and wanted to take it for a ride, well what i wasnt told is that the truck had overheating issues, driving i couldnt see the gauge, i was told it did it once in bumper to bumper traffic i nthe city with the A/C on, which i know can happen, this boy has been driving the truck everywhere at full throttle at like 250 degree's temperature, im surprised it hasnt blown up yet, well Dan scanned it and found overheat and injection pump codes, we looked at the radiator and found like 10 COMPLETE species of bug, not single bugs, all of the bugs in the species, it looked like the radiator was wearing a wool sweater it was so bad, we power washed the radiator, cleared the codes and voila' no codes. ECM was telling the truck to shutdown cause it was running so hot. Dan told me to make bring it back over in a few weeks and he would rescan it for anymore injection pump codes, he thinks the injection pump is due to be replaced within a few thousand miles.
I havent been able to look at the charger yet, i am going to keep my distance on this truck cause it is going to become a can of worms really quickly.
***NEW INFO*** i was told by his buddy and a friend of mine that dosent own a diesel that it was ok to run the truck with no filter, coming from the kid that has a 1/2 ton 4x4 dodge on 35's that thought his steering box was bad when the tracbar was almost falling out and couldnt figure out why it would shake when you hit a bump. this is an actual copy of what we said on yahoo messenger talking to him.
ram_tuff_v10: get a air filter in that thing too, he is gonna kill the engine with dust, score the cylinder walls and put alot of grit in the oil
built2ride: it will be fine as long as he had the box shut and its not like that all the time
ram_tuff_v10: that truck pulls air from the fenderwell, it will screw those 24 valves up bad
built2ride: it will be all right the thing never did have a fliter in it
ram_tuff_v10: oooooooooook
built2ride: as long as he dont have it out all the time
