Fuel filter upgrade from 99 to 02?
Fuel filter upgrade from 99 to 02?
Hey gang, I just got home from the dealer and neither the heater element or the FF housing is available for my 99. They said I had to get an '02 assembly without the heater for $1,100.00. The guy at the parts counter informed me of a diesel shop nearby who made up some plugs to replace the element but they want around $200 for one. I have a wet and flowing leak around my heater (enought to coat my bumper and tailgate and deprime my system). Has anyone got a good fix other than a pile of rtv? Has anyone done this upgrade. I'm not sure if I need a fuel heater here at all but I might when I go hunting and whatnot in the cold.
P.S. Does anyone have a spare exhaust manifold? Mine seemed to have developed a crack. I wonder if it's worth stitching... Gosh.. another 300 bucks.

Have any junk yards around you with diesels? Check there first. $1100 is outrageous, be better off getting a full FASS system, and still have money left over for a 3-pc. manifold. How did a cracked fuel fuel filter housing cover your tailgate and bumper anyway?
The FF housing isn't cracked, I just have a leak around the heater element and the fuel is running off the back of the canister and being deposited on the back of the truck via the airstream. Same as a good oil leak would. My exhaust manifold is cracked right in the middle where 3&4 exhaust ports are.
I was just looking at the FASS on the web. Not much info on there but I see alot of people are running it.

HUH??? Find another dealer.....that is rediculous. 97 - 99 CTD's use the same filter housing assembly and there is no reason I can think of why a direct replacement shouldn't be available. You may want to visit a Cummins dealer to cut down on the silliness if that is the way the dealer treats you.
I was looking at the program on the computer there, it's similar to our illustrated parts breakdown for aircraft, and there was no fuel heater at all. It only brought up the entire assy. Tell me more about FASS..
That is outrageously priced. Heck, I would sell you the one on my truck for $550, that's a sweet deal
.
Sorry, couldn't resist.......
A guy on e-bay who goes by "redlinear" surely has one. I just looked and he does not have an auction going on right now to email him a see. I have bought many parts for my truck from him. Used ex manifolds on e-bay usually go for ~$200 or less.

Go directly to Cummins and get the part that you need. Check this webpage and near the bottom is the fuel heater for $48 and shipping.
