Fuel Filter Change

Hi Guys, The Search forum is not working this mourning so I thought i'd ask, I've owned Power Stroke's & Duramax's but this is my first Cummins. After filter change(Luber-Finer L1261F) is there a primer button or do you just turn the key on-off a few times to fill the housing back up with fuel on an 2001? Also I noticed a braided line going from the back of the turbo to the oil filter housing, is this normal or some after market thing? Thanks

The line is normal and yes just bump the starter a few times to prime the fuel filter housing. If you lp is week you may have to bleed a few lines.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge, its the most important gauge on a 2nd gen 24v. You dont want anything below 10psi at WOT or your $1500 injector pump will die. Its best to ditch the factory lp and get a fass, airdog or a mechanical pump like a fuel boss.

With a brand new IP, do they also change the LP too? If not should I put in a new LP to be sure? Im sorry but I don't have a shop manuel or owners manuel yet, is the LP located around the fuel filter housing?

Now is the injector pump new or the lift pump? The lift pump is behind the filter housing. If its got a new injector pump I would definatly get a new lift pump before it kills the IP.

Sorry new Bosch IP, I'm looking and theres nothing behind the fuel filter canister. I can see straight down to the starter. I see a backet to the left of the canister but nothing on it. Am I looking in the right spot? Thanks

it might have an in tank I think that was dodges way of (fixing) the problem not sure though. If not look down along the frame rail it might have an after market fass or airdog or something alog those lines

nothing along the frame rail, so u guess it's in the tank. This is my 1st Cummins, is it a pain to change if it's in the tank? If it's in the tank is there a chance of less failure? Thanks

probobly I,m prety sure it was a warenty thing through dodge when the IP died they would replace it and they put the lift pump in the tank Its easier to push the fuel than pull it.Not 100% sure sombody will proboby chime in with more info. Its the same as other in tank pumps to change. I use a Fass D.D.R.P and havent had any issuse they are around $260 and they are put in the same place as factory on the side of the motor. I would recomend a fuel pressure guage or a low fp warning light. Good Luck hopefully someone knows more about the in tank pump and can point you in the right direction.

I've heard that with electric fuel pumps you want to put them as close to the tank as possible (or in this case in-tank). With mechanical fuel pumps you usually put them on the engine or next to engine, as they pull better than push.

I stopped in at the local Dodge dealer, last week, just to see how much a LP would cost from them and was told that the number for the LP crossed over to the intank set-up.
