Fuel Filter...
Hey ive heard some guys change fuel filters every 10,000 miles and other various mileage incriments. Why are we supposed to change the filter so often? I bought my truck with 87,000 and now have 98,000 on her and havent changed it yet. Thanks for the help!

now I just get the fleetguard filter kits from geno's
Every 10K here as well.
First change, right at 10K, the filter was filthy black gross yuck.
2nd change, at 20K, less gross, less black, less filthy, but still looked like it needed to be changed.
Each change it got less dirty looking.
Last change at 50K it hardly looked used at all, just dampened by the Diesel fuel, even after running a tank of B20 biodiesel a couple months ago.
Fuel pressure was looking lower than it should be, so I changed it anyway.

I buy Fleetguard filter from the Cummins dealer in Grangeville Idaho.
A for changing fuel filters... Its every 15K according to 2002 specs. I've only had to change one fuel filter early (6K miles) from a bad tank of fuel!
In the 15K time that filter will be BLACK I mean BLACK!!! So you more than likely starving your VP44 for cool clean fuel if your not changing it!
I had a pic of what a fuel filter looks like after 6K miles of bad fuel and a brand new one sitting besides it... Big difference!

When you change the filter do you just have to make sure that the tank of fuel is full so you dont get air into the lines or are there any other precautions i have to worry about when i change it.

Open up the filter and remove the cartridge.
Drain the filter of fuel using the drain valve.
Close vlave and reload filter with fresh fuel from a can.
Insert new filter.
Screw lid on.
Bump starter. It will run for about 25 secs...
Start truck!
Easy no problem...
If you do get air in the lines... Crack 1,3,4 injector lines and try starting. After it started tight the injectors back up. But I've never had to do this though...

same here...works every time...I just let it run for a few minutes to make sure that there is no air in the lines..and there never is.
