Drain the fuel from the cannister, reason is when you lift out the dirty filter the crud can fall off and into the cannister.<br> Then take a clean cloth and wipe the dirt from the bottom of it to get any remaining dirt or crud.

 

I drain mine once a month. I replace it every couple of months.
