fuel filter ?

Going to do my first filter change, any way of doing this to ensure that no air gets in the system? After draining the canister and cleaning the wif sensor i am going to fill it with fresh fuel before replacing the filter, will this help?
Also how often do you drain water from the canister? I do a highway run, 220 miles per night,5 nights a week, fill up every second night. Drained some out after first week, no water.let it go two weeks next time, no water. During this three week span temps were very cold here (-30c at night) am i pushing it? When you bump the starter does the pump run until the system is all pressured up or does it run for a set time? Any suggestions or advise greatly appreciated.

rob

Re:fuel filter ?

DO NOT DUMP UNFILTERED DIESEL IN!! Just drain it, clean it, put the new filter in and bump the starter about 3 or 4 times and it should fill up. It might run rough for a minute or so, but it'll be fine after that! ;D I've never had any water in mine, so I don't ever dump it. Except when I change the filter.

I don't dump mine either. I do fill it up with clean fuel and it fires right up.

Diesel Gods,
I'm about to change my fuel filter for the first time at 15,000 miles. I plan on following the Geno's Garage tips on changing it. Is this about what everyone else does? Take a look at this site and let me know. Thanks. 8)

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/filter/00fuel_filter.htm

Re:fuel filter ?

I did exactly that about 2 months ago.
Quite simple, and saved myself about 75 bucks, what the dealer wanted to charge.

The only thing I ran into is my truck did not want to start afterwards. :'(

Make sure you cycle the lift pump at least 5 times (bump the starter, listen to the pump run, usually about 30 seconds, bump again, etc)

Some suggest filling the cannister manually with filtered fuel to make sure it is full.
I drained the cannister into a 20 oz coke bottle to check for water, hindsight I would have poured that back into the cannister to aid in filling (it had no water whatsoever)

After attempting to start 5 times, I was just about to crack an injector line, but tried one more time with a little go pedal action and it fired up, ran really rough, but smoothed out after a bit.

Now it starts right up with only half a crank, just like it did before the filter change.

Nice warm feeling doing something myself instead of paying someone else to do it.

phox

Re:fuel filter ?

tlea7-When you fill the cannister with clean fuel, has that been filtered first? Tony seems to think it is very important that unfiltered fuel not be used to fill the cannister.
How do you like those isspro guages? i think that's going to be my first purchase.

rob

Re:fuel filter ?

I get a gallon straight from the pump and pour it thru a filter into the cannister. I then bump the starter once and it fires right up. The guages are great and look great. Make sure you get the green bulb covers so they light up like the stock ones. I got them from Scott @ Massdiesel (about $350.00 with all the leads and pillar mount)
goodluck,
Tim

Re:fuel filter ?

the fuel you pour in will have to go thru the filter before getting to the vp44. bump the pump for a couple extended runs, while bleeding any air out at the vp44 test port.whas worked everytime for me, 62000 miles and have never seen any water when draining
JMHO...FWIW

Re:fuel filter ?

Yes you can pour the fuel in then it gets filtered. Don`t ever use what you took out, cause the drain hose has alot of sheight in it!
Bump the starter, during the cycle you hear it tighten up.
(pressure) not just stop . it has a cycle time.
Whats easier don`t drain it, bump once and your going again.
Danny

That sounds logical to me, since the diesel fuel that is in their is already filtered. 8) Then just put the new filter in. Please let me know. Thanks. 8)

Re:fuel filter ?

I read somewhere that the easiest way to filter the fuel going into the filter housing was to pour it through a paint strainer. I did mine that way and bumped the starter once, fired right up. I have only needed to change the filter 1 time so far, but I intend to do it the same way every time.

Re:fuel filter ?

I use an automotive type paint strainer made for laquer paint. The reason I dump the fuel is I can wipe out the sediment thats in there and clean the WIF sensor probe like DC recommends.
Tim

Re:fuel filter ?

Thanks for all the tips folks, gona do it this weekend.
Still one thing i'm not sure of, is the fuel filtered when comming into the canister from the tank, or when leaving the canister to the inj pump? If filtered comming in, the fuel in the canister should be o.k. right? (I have my own new longer drain hose on the canister so it's clean)

rob
