front main seal leaking

have oil pouring out the front of my motor, its NOT the overflow vent deal. I have had it steam cleaned to better see the location because its blowing all over the place, but it seems like its either the front cover gasket or front main seal.
how hard is this to remove?
any tips i should know before beginning? going to do this project one day this week.

Are you sure its not the vaccum pump gasket between the PS pump and the vac pump?

Changing the seal is pretty straight forward, just requires some disassembly. Having an extra set of wheels would be handy, because then you can buy the proper seal when you open it up. You might need one with a speedi sleeve if the crank has a groove worn into it. Cummins carries that seal and sleeve, among other places. Might need to come up with a way to install it though thats outside the box. If its anything like a sleeved rear seal, the seal and sleeve come assembled and can't be taken apart without wrecking the seal. We had to press the seal into the housing and then the sleeve onto the crank along with the housing.

I will check that, seems to be dripping more on the right (pass) side. if i did it i was thinking of doing the whole thing, timing cover gasket and all.

If its on the right side its probably not the vac pump then.

if its on the right side its proble your timing cover thats whats wrong with mine. mine is running from the top of the timing cover down to the right side and all over the bottom of my truck. i dont have to worry about anything rusting up for a while lol

Well got it done, the timing cover gasket between the block and cover had a piece about two inches in length missing I did not have the time to rip the whole motor apart to fix it, so i cleaned it up really good with brakleen and wire brushed the area and used a special epoxy to fill the spot and fix the leak.

its nice to park in the driveway now, was parking in the dirt and had to walk!

What is the the brand and type of epoxy you used? My girdle has a slight leak near the rear main and I need to patch it up until next winter when I'll be able to pull the motor and fix it for good. Thanks, Dan.
